Match report ESCC 2s chose to bat first, and we started steadily enough. Will and Ashkay did best early on, both reaching double figures before succumbing to the idiosyncrasies of Meadows 3 on a very gusty day. Cautious optimism at 67 for 4 faded at 77 for 7. But then on strode our hirsute hero, Daryll. Useful tail end resistance at the other end encouraged him to 46 not out, including nine boundaries. The last three wickets more than doubled the score, and 160 all out was more than we dared hope for at the outset. After all we had something to defend in deteriorating conditions.

As the horizontal drizzle got wetter, Daryll bowled through his spell into the wind, claiming three of the first four wickets. Meantime Gus, then Murali, kept excellent control downwind. Several mistimed shots went high but safe, as Heriots went from 38 for 4, adding 50 in smart order. Gerry’s introduction hardly slowed their progress, but Sohail’s neat legside stumping of their young lefthander broke the partnership – and Gerry’s duck for wickets this season. A big six off his next over induced the culprit to try again to an even slower ball, which reached middle stump shortly after he completed the shot. Showing decisive captaincy, Asanka curtailed the old stager’s fun, bringing back Gus and Murali. Two wickets each soon cleaned up the resistance, with a final mention for Will’s juggling high catch off Gus.

Now undefeated after three matches, this side is now believing in its potential week by week
