Watsonians CC 2nd XI v Edinburgh South Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 02 May 2015 at 1pm
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 2 Wickets
Match report
From the capture of the first Watsonian wicket(69/1 from 13.4 after being put in)this was a gutsy win for the Firsts. True,Cheslyn's fine undefeated century would appear in any headline but several players, headed by Farhan, made important contributions. Sohail took a catch at the wicket off Cheslyn to separate the home openers. In Cheslyn's next over he and Farhan featured in two dismissals, firstly Farhan's throw to the bowler's end secured a run out and 4 balls later Farhan took a falling juggling catch at backward square leg to send back opener K. Rae, who had just reached his 50. The introduction of left arm spin from Matt (a slightly reluctant bowler, but hopefully no longer)saw Sohail accept a stumping chance and Paul cling on to a stinger at short cover. Adarsh returned to the attack to bowl "Robbo"(31 with 4 x 4 and 1 x 6)who was threatening to play a damaging innings and he again hit the stumps to claim his second victim. Manu came back and dived forward to grab a caught and bowled and followed up 3 balls later with a successful appeal for l.b.w. before Farhan took the tenth wicket by bowling the No. 7 bat L. Campbell.
At the end of 5 overs we were 10 for 2 but Akshay stuck with Cheslyn in a stand of 33 for the third wicket while Matt helped our No. 3 to put on 32 for the 5th wicket The important stand was 59 for the 8th wicket with Farhan in 10.2 overs and two untroubled fours from Rhydian at 10 and four bondaries by Cheslyn took us past the home total as the earlier spots of rain turned into serious drizzle.
Stats do not tell the whole story but they are enlightening - Cheslyn made 116* from 105 balls in 147 minutes. The breakdown of the balls received shows 3 x 6,16 x 4, 5 x 2, 24 x 1 and 57 dot balls. The innings was played in worsening weather conditions, although it would have to be admitted that late on the bowlers would be coping with a wet ball, and on a wicket which started damp and become damper. In short a wicket very different to the South African surfaces with which Cheslyn is familiar. His scoring rate was entirely in line with current standards but it contained nothing extravagant being paced at a rate to comfortably reach our target and was in line with a remark which I heard Mark Ramprakash make along the lines "I am looking to score a run off every ball but if I can't do that I'll defend it". Let's hope that this example of that dictum influences other batsmen in the club.
For this week's statistical curiosity look at both the bowling figures and scores returned by Adarsh and Manu.
