Match report Rain forced the abandonment of the 3rds match against Preston Village 2nds. Having only narrowly defeated their opponents in Prestonpans, South expected a tough return fixture. The home side lost the toss, and were put into bat on a Meadows pitch that was surprisingly playable despite several inches of rain in the previous 48 hours.

Top-scorer Kingsley, and later Chris tried to build innings, but a succession of wickets - from a mixture of ill-advised strokes and good bowling meant South were quickly in trouble. Loud thunderclaps could by now be heard across the Meadows. For those with especially acute hearing, a thin edge down the leg side to the wicketkeeper from the South captain was also audible, as he was dismissed for 19. Ian did well to hustle the tail, but South were eventually dismissed for a below par 78. As if to presage the aquatic conditions that would follow, five batsmen were dismissed for ducks.

After tea, the skies rapidly darkened, and only 19 balls of the Preston Village reply were possible. During this time, the opposing skipper Kenny Black was dismissed by the fit-again Vishnu, well caught behind by Ian, suggesting that an unlikely South victory was not altogether out of the question. Nonetheless, when heavy rain set in, the prevailing feeling was that the 3rds were fortunate to preserve their unbeaten league record, and that better batting will be required next week to continue the run.
