Match report The Firsts again battled hard but this came out on as the losers against Musselburgh. They won the toss and batted first on a wicket which aided seam bowling and also produced some unexpected sharply lifting deliveries. The partnership stats tell most of the tale with the two highest being for the first wicket (22 by Abhi and Manu) and the last (21 by Luke and Rohin). There was a collapse from 55/2 to 67/7 but the last three wickets added 45 thanks to Milan, Farhan and the aforementioned last wicket pair. The moving ball, a smart stumping, an unlikely catch and a run out fiasco all played a part in limiting our total.
With the ball Manu and Farhan bowled a testing opening 10 overs with our left armer claiming 2 wickets in 3 balls in the 8th over- his second victim paid a glowing tribute to the quality of the ball which he had edged for Mike to catch at second slip. (Paul had caught the first behind the stumps). Luke came on to to replace Manu and claimed two wickets in his second over, bowling their No.1 and having his replacement superbly caught by Matt at point - this catch earned the admiration of the home gallery. The home number 4 had, meantime, played positively to boost the home tally but he was run out (more good work by Matt)to make 'Burgh 50 for 5. Manu held a catch to give Luke his third wicket to make it 53 for 6 but the home captain, Ed Gatner, and all rounder H. Verma then added a crucial 43 for the seventh wicket and although there was some home anxiety we could not expose Nos. 10 and 11.
From a coaching viewpoint our focus at future practice should be running between the wickets and catching. catching.
