Edinburgh South Cricket Club 1st XI v Bass Rock CC on Wed 14 Jul 2021 at 6pm
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets

Match report South won the toss and sent Bass Rock in to bat in this Semi-final of The Terry Newcombe Trophy at Inch Park. Virender struck early by bowling opener Fraser-Harris with the third ball of his second over. (Bass Rock 12 for 1 from 3.3 overs). Smart work by Vipin ran out visiting number three, Verma, to make them 22/ 2 after 6.5. However, it was former Scotland captain George Salmond ,who had taken the first ball, who was joined by Sam Woodford. This pair added 50 in 7.3 overs with Woodford running swiftly between the wickets while George, on a slow wicket, proving the "class is permanent" part of the often used epigram - one leg side four being obtained entirely from perfect timing. The partnership was ended when George was trapped l.b.w. by Kalyan K for 46 with 6 fours from 53 balls. Two balls later our seventh bowler of the night bowled the visiting captain to make the North Berwick based side 72/4 from 14.3. At that point our former player Joe Rose came to the wicket and he showed that he had lost none of his speed or his ability to guide the ball into spaces in the field. When Bass Rock's 20 overs were up they had reached 111 for 6. Our additional wickets had come when Woodford was caught by Kiran off Russell and a run out when a second run was not completed from the final delivery of the innings
In our chase we lost our first wicket at 20 when Paul was caught. Nab joined Dean and together they added 43 in 5.2 overs at which point Dean on 23 became the first of three victims for Armstrong. George and Harry were the others and soon after Nab (26) fell to Fraser-Harris to make us 73/5 at the end of the 14th over. With Vipin run out and Virender bowled we then became 84/7 from 16.4. Any anxiety which may have been being felt around the boundary was driven away as Douglas and Kiran saw us to our target with 5 balls to spare. Douglas, who had come in when Vipin was dismissed had opened his account with a boundary off his second ball and Kiran had taken 3 off the first ball which he faced. The 18th over was key and we scored 14 from it - 3 twos, a six and a single to Douglas plus a single off the last ball to Kiran. The 19th over started with a triple wide and produced 9 all told to level the scores leaving Kiran to thump the winning four from the first ball of the last over.
Kirk Brae await us in the final which the Parks Association have arranged for Inch Park on 28th July.
