Edinburgh South Cricket Club Lost by five wickets

Match report 116

We travelled to North Berwick with 12 players, thinking that they had 10. On arrival they had dropped down to 8 so we leant them Charlie and Bailey, the thinking being to get all our keepers a good run and for Charlie to get some bowling in too. After the toss (a discussion next to the nets in between balls) they decided we would bat first. It was also agreed we would do rolling wickets.

Mohan was the onfield captain (one of way too many, sorry Mohan!) and fancied a left-right hand opening combination with Eoghan and Rod. BR's youngster Weatherhead was certainly bowling a storm, dismissing Eoghan (caught by Charlie with a thin edge) and bowling with decent force. One member of their club, who was passing by at the time, asked who was bowling because the kid was a spinner last year! At the other end, the canny Iain Hemsley was causing problems with drift (to his surprise) and the slope (to our batters surprise). Rod went shortly after, bowled through off his inner thigh and onto the stumps while Iain was still busy appealing for LBW. Rahul was first down. Nervous from lack of practice in the off season, his class never looked like it had left him. He didn't look like he would be out any time soon. And Kunal in at 4 was hitting some impressive shots. Realising early on that Recreation Park offered very little value for shots, he went aerial and almost hit a six, continuing his decent nick from the intra club friendly the day before. However, he ended up bowled by their other youngster and son of the captain - G Munden.

As usual, Anura offered entertainment on the astro, looking classy and pleading with former Scotland captain G Salmond to take it easy on him, and Salmond pleading the same in return. Anura was looking in great touch, looking to spend time at the crease and play straight shots. Salmond was impressively driving his off spin into the astro surface, getting the ball to vary it's bounce a tiny bit. The danger with off spin is that the ball is, more often than not, challenging the stumps, and eventually the Suriyapperuma Stumps obliged after Anura played over and across one.

I don't know how, but Mohan convinced Kalyan to come in at number 6. I fear his duck will only encourage Kalyan's reluctance to bat in the middle order, despite the insistence of many that he can and should bat higher and with freedom! In came Captain Mohan. One of the entertainers on the cricket pitch, you never know what to expect, apart from some swings early on. Which is what came! But he soon settled into his rhythm and work, hitting a couple of nice shots over midwicket and straighter for 4s. In the meantime Rahul had been plugging away, cashing in at the Bank of Twenty-ish Runs a Match. But his dismissal to the tall leg spinner, Long, brought an end to his relatively long stay at the crease.

It was looking like an Edinburgh South scorecard of old - 55-5 - but Phil wasn't worried. Unflappable as ever, he came in and hit a lovely driven 4 and decided he was quite content with that for the innings. And quite right too. Jeremy and Mohan were now at the crease - two senior players - hoping to steady the ship. But they teach the youngsters to hit the stumps well these days, and that's what Munden did, getting rid of Captain Mohan. Keshav arrived at the crease as the 10th batter and final stand if it been a normal 10-a-side match. 20 overs gone. Your narrator loves a North Berwick fightback, and trying not to appear cocky to the opposition, agreed with Jeremy to bat until the 30th over together and collect/buy some extras. And that's what the two did. Seeing off Charlie's 3 over spell of amazing (truly) inswinging bowling, and Iain's ever threatening bowling, we took the score from 60 to 85 in 10 overs. Keshav scoring 1 before getting out trying to swing, and Jeremy scoring 8 in his innings before retiring to let the big hitters come back in. Both Rod and Eoghan played again with freedom and power, putting on 30 runs in 5 overs, hitting some impressive boundaries on a treacle outfield. Eoghan in particular looked suited to that kind of role, backing himself to play the proper cricket shots powerfully that we know he can. 115 looked very unlikely after 20 overs, but by crook and hook we got to what was a par score.

The bowling innings is best summarised thus: George Salmond. Special mention to Phil Broadbent for his 1st wicket for Edinburgh South, dismissing the class John Aimes and settling down well bowling to a left-right opening combo consisting of Salmond. Mentions also to Mohan for bowling pace (one of my favourite sights in the club seeing him steam in) and captaining whilst we were confusing him no end, and the opposition were desperately trying to get him to speed up our bowling innings. Also to Kunal for keeping tidily. But biggest mention to Bailey, who retired not out and was the leading run scorer from Edinburgh South. He looked comfortable for the duration of the innings, controlling the ball straight and holding his shape beautifully. A class act against a bowling side who were easing their way into bowling without being surrounded by walls and nets.
