RHC 4ths v Edinburgh South Cricket Club Mitres on Sat 10 Jun 2023 at 1pm
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won

Match report A game of cricket on a summer's day in the Meadows in Edinburgh is always an exciting though challenging event and on 10th June, Mitres and RCH4s battled toe-to-toe for nearly 60 overs before Mitres narrowly came out victorious. Both teams fielded 10 players for the full game (RCH had an 11th but he had to leave early) and Phil Griffiths captaining for Mitres made the first positive move by negotiating to bat first on what turned out to be a typical green Meadows wicket with variable, generally low bounce, offering seam and swing movement in both directions. Despite the warm sunshine an easterly wind blew at times across the ground, which at times was strong enough to blow off the bails and provide drift for the spinners. Phil G and Jas opened the batting and quickly found it tough to score but dug in with an opening partnership of 24 in 9 overs which saw off the opening bowlers. Jas went for a well-crafted 8 in the 10th over and then Gordon and Stephen fell to a left arm medium pacer who cleaned them up off a few paces in a wicket maiden in the 11th over to leave Mitres teetering on 29/3. Enter Phil Broadbent who played the team's most rapid innings of 11 off about 25 balls in partnership with Phil G and later Shafi who fresh from his 6 hitting exploits the previous game did manage to muscle a 4 across the slow outfield and made 6. Phil G retired after the 15th over and Shafi (caught) and Phil B (lbw) were out in quick succession in overs 19 and 20. There was a worry that Mitres might be bowled out early but the calm pros Anura and Jeremy hung around, taking the runs and byes that were on offer making 4 apiece before Jeremy was bowled. Yallene came in for her first game of the season and managed a single before being caught at slip. Declan came and went for a duck, therefore Phil G returned and hit what he thought was a brilliant back cut for 4 only for it to slow down rapidly before reaching the white line, possibly rolling onto one of the many barbecue holes, which are a notable feature of cricket in the Meadows. Anura was caught behind and the innings folded on 68 all out in the 29th over. The top score, by far went to extras with 23 with Phil G next on 12 not out. In the reply, the RCH4s openers were faced with the medium fast bowling of Declan and Phil B and found runs just as elusive as Mitres had. Declan bowled one of their openers for 2 and with Phil B the combined spell of 8 overs went for just 15 runs. Phil G then brought on spinners Jeremy and Yallene which turned the match in Mitre’s favour. Jeremy delivered his usual nagging line and length, took a wicket, kept the team focused with his encouraging comments and even stood his ground against a pair of e-bikers. However, it was Yallene who stole the show with teasing flight and turn off the pitch, first inducing an airy cover drive to Jas, then clean bowling the match’s top scorer Honeywell as he went back to cut, and crashed through the defences of a third to finish with figures of 4 overs, 1 maiden, 3 for 6. The Mitre’s fielding was excellent as it needed to be to defend the low total and everyone gave 100%. This was combined with Phil G's crafty captaincy, taking in everyone's experience to set up good field placements and shrewd bowling changes. Declan did sliding stops like a pro, and Stephen ran across the field with great enthusiasm. The catching too was excellent, Yallene took a fine catch at slip as an encore to her bowling and Gordon leapt like a salmon to take a catch off a ‘bump ball’. The batsman was so impressed that he walked and had to be called back. After Jeremy and Yallene’s spells, RCH4 were 34/5 at 16 overs. Shafi and Anura each took a wicket and it was 56/7 when Phil G tossed the ball to Stephen who bowled a typically unpredictable over of good balls and wides. Off the last ball, however, the batsman flicked a full toss to square leg where Phil B nonchalantly pouched the catch despite the sun – 62/8. Then with 4 needed for a tie and 5 for a win and plenty of overs left, Declan finished the game in Mitre’s favour by bowling the last batsman with a middle stump yorker. This was an exciting finish to what was an enjoyable game, which was all played in great spirit.
