Edinburgh South Cricket Club 1st XI v Kirk Brae CC on Sat 18 Jun 2016 at 1pm
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets
Match report
The field of four slips and a gully set towards the end of Karl's eight over spell will remain long in the memories of the Edinburgh South members playing and watching. Omkar took a sharp catch at second slip to give Karl his fourth and final wicket. These cost him 12 runs. His first wicket in a hostile pacey stint came in his second over, fourth of the match, when Mike caught a flying edge and in between two batsmen were bowled. Farhan supported well in the early overs and having replaced Karl,Luke also bowled eight overs straight through in securing a three wicket haul. Two bowled and an l.b.w. victim indicate that he was concentrating on bowling full and straight. Farhan had claimed an early wicket while Wiqas and Manu wrapped up the tail with a wicket each - all after Mike had won the toss and asked KB to bat.
Paul and Manu put on 26 for the first wicket but were dismissed in three balls of each other. This brought Karl and Ian R together for a key partnership of 40 in 18.5 overs against an attack which set a variety of problems on a drying wicket. Ian found the boundary three times in his tally of 19 while Karl maintained his shape as he "kept calm and batted on." Given his recent form it was a surprise that Rajeev did not stay long so when Mike came in the score was 69 for 4 from 26.3. The captain gave the scoring rate a boost with 18 from 17 balls and Karl hit slow bowler V. Gupta down the ground for 6 in their partnership which added 33 in 37 balls. Karl hit a second six as he attempted to nurse us to the target but, with the scores level, Omkar went aerial for the winning hit only to be caught at mid on. This brought Luke to the wicket but as the batsmen had crossed while the catch was being made he was at the non-strikers end. Two balls later Karl struck the winning four, which was his first of the innings. When it was all over, was it Captain Rusty who said something about "grinding out a win"?
Thanks are due to Marchmont C.C. for accommodating this game on their second pitch after machinery problems had ruled out playing at Inch Park.
