Edinburgh South CC appoint Scotland International Katie McGill as Women’s Head Coach

03 May 2017

Hi all - please find attached press release details of our new coaching appointment to the club.

We are delighted to announce the signing of Katie McGill to lead our newly formed Women’s Section.   This is a key appointment in the club’s strategy to invest resources in high quality development and coaching resource.

This is part of a new three year plan that involves significant financial investment in four key roles – a junior development officer, a women’s development officer and a men’s and women’s head coach.

Katie’s initial role will be to help form then develop the girls and women taking part in our newly formed women’s hardball team.   The development officers will play a key role in encouraging girls to take part in the game, and this team will give them a pathway to hardball with the club separate from the senior men’s pathway.

Katie will continue to play senior women’s cricket for Carlton CC whilst Edinburgh South CC’s team is in it’s forming stages.   Katie will also be offered a place in and form part of the Edinburgh South CC 1st XI plans for the 2017 season.  We’ve no doubt her leadership skills and international experience will have a positive impact on the wider club.

Edinburgh South are having a launch session for their new women’s section on Sunday 14th May between 11am and 12.30pm at Inch Park Community Sports Club, 227 Gilmerton Road, Edinburgh.  EH16 5UD.   Anyone is welcome to come and try the game, no experience necessary and you’ll expect a warm welcome!   Further details on the new section and the session on the 14th May can be found on our Facebook page.

Paul Reddish, Edinburgh South Cricket Club

‘We are building for the long term here at Edinburgh South CC.  This is a key appointment in a structure that now involves four paid roles in development and coaching.  We intend to make Edinburgh South CC a club that invests heavily in the development of our own to build future success.

Colin Mills has done a great job developing our future cricket stars, and given the number of girls now taking part amongst our 70 strong junior section, it’s important we give them a route to continue to play their cricket with us.  We are absolutely delighted to appoint someone of the calibre of Katie.  Not only is she an experienced coach, but has the personal attributes we were looking for to not just coach but lead and develop, being a great role model for the girls and women at Edinburgh South CC.   The women’s section will be given equal status in terms of volunteer time and financial investment at the club.

We look forward to working with Katie in our ambition to make Edinburgh South CC’s women’s section as large as the men’s within five years.’

Katie McGill:

I'm really excited to set-up and develop a women's team with Edinburgh South CC. The club has undergone incredible expansion in recent years but maintained a real friendly, community feeling something I am keen to replicate in the women's section. Coupled with the support and interest of existing members, there's a huge potential for ESCC to become a big part of the expanding women's and girls cricket scene in Edinburgh. Any experience level is welcome - we will introduce and develop skills as we go, creating a fun, exciting group around the cricket.

Nic Wilson, Women’s and Girl’s Participation Manager, Cricket Scotland

‘It’s great to see another club committing important resources to the growing women’s game in Scotland.  Edinburgh South Cricket Club have a great setup and to see them putting as much emphasis and investment into the women’s game as the men’s going forward is fantastic.   We hope it proves a template for success that other clubs can look to.  Growth of the women’s game in Scotland can only be done with the support and investment of the clubs.   We are fully committed to helping them do so.
