Match report
Spending a Thursday afternoon playing cricket on an immaculate ground like Merchiston is a pleasure dreamt of by many, but enjoyed by few. Arriving one short, we must thank young Martin Lockley* of S4 for being “volunteered” to join us. He acquitted himself well.
Agreeing a 35 over game, the School chose to bat. A couple of early wickets for Blair, easing himself into bowling for a change, gave us unjustified confidence. The boys soon rattled up an impressive 196 for 9, courtesy of the fast outfield and some rather friendly bowling. Eventually Obaid took two wickets in successive balls, dismissing the opener Ibbetson caught for 49, then conjuring a stumping, both by Will. Blair ended with four scalps to his name.
5.6 per over against a well schooled attack might have been achievable, had we not given eight catches, all gratefully received. Well, almost all - a meaty flat square cut by Blair, on 1, stuck with a thwack in a very surprised, fleshy young hand. 60 for 7 around half way looked forlorn, but some late resistance against the change bowlers helped our cause. Sanjeev top scored with a quick 18.
Meanwhile Gerry was relaxing in the sun. Martin was down to bat at ten, and the old stager realised that he had possibly not partnered an OAP before, so warned against expecting too many threes. However when their moment came, Martin coaxed Gerry into life in a last wicket partnership of 29, the best of the innings as it turned out.
The inevitable result was achieved just in time for the boys to disappear for dinner at 7.
