Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 54 runs
Match report
The 3rds excellent start to the season continued with another comprehensive victory. Sent in to bat on a spiteful Meadows pitch, Edinburgh South were immediately in trouble, stumbling to 13/3. Madan (13) – making his 2011 debut – and Shashank (17) led a partial recovery, with scores in the teens good efforts on a pitch with seriously variable bounce. Madan’s dismissal brought to the crease Will George, who was to play the decisive innings of the match. .
Starting his innings with just 29 runs on the board, Will batted with great skill and temperament, sharing productive mini-stands with Murali and Tanny. By the time Karthik was dismissed, Edinburgh South had recovered to 96/9, which represented both a defensible score, and a good recovery from 43/6.
But there was more to come, as last man and captain Pete Kingsley shared an unbroken 66 run last wicket stand with Will. Batting more than twenty overs together, Will and Pete sensibly showed how to survive and prosper on a difficult pitch with a mixture of watchful defence, smart running and calculated aggression against the bad balls. Will’s superb unbeaten 48 included four boundaries, as he also hared through for eight twos. Kingsley – as if hewn out of a block of pure common sense – blocked and spanked in turn as the situation demanded, contributing a useful 17 not out.
163 was an imposing target in these conditions, and it was no surprise when Vishnu (1/17) and, in particular, Murali’s (4/13) good opening spells were immediately rewarded. Murali’s superb spell removed four top order batsmen, as Stirling slumped to 27/5. Tanny and Mark Kirby kept the pressure on, despite some effective hitting from Van Burren (33). When he fell to Mark (2/18), the writing was on the wall, and Kingsley experimented with his change bowlers. Madan’s off breaks took two wickets, one well caught by Kingsley, and Shashank took the final wicket to complete an fine victory.
