Preston Village 2nds v Edinburgh South Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 21 May 2011 at 1300
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 15 runs.

Match report The 3rds extended their 100% record in a closely fought encounter in Prestonpans. Asked to bat on an up-and-down pitch in extremely blustery conditions, Edinburgh South began cautiously. Knowing that the unreliable track and slow outfield would ensure a low-scoring game, Chris Griggs (10) and especially Peter Fyfe (38) did well to ensure only one wicket was lost in the first 18 overs. Even though only 36 runs were scored in the first 22 overs, a solid platform was laid.

Shah (25 off 24 balls), Vishnu (20 off 22) and Johnathan (15 off 11) provided the acceleration. Meanwhile, Fyfe, who carried his bat through to the 34th over, also took advantage of loose deliveries. 147/9 was a decent total against a capable bowling attack in difficult conditions.

Managing limited bowling resources, Pete Kingsley (2/15) opened with himself, and conceded less than two an over in his eight overs, even though one of his wickets came via an unplayable length ball that shot along the ground. Vishnu (1/28) bowled with his familar control and skill, removing their opening batsmen and captain, and with a runout, Preston Village were in deep trouble at 32/4.

Fabbreschi and Forsyth added 44 for the fifth wicket as Preston Village recovered somewhat, but a hostile spell from Ayyapan (1/17) meant that the batsmen were forced to concentrate on survival. Ayyanpan, bowling fast and straight, caused problems throughout his spell - and as with Vishnu - his single wicket failed to accurately reflect the problems he caused.

Also of great help to skipper Kingsley was that Karthik (1/33) skillfully bowled his eight overs, repeatedly beating the bat, making light of the absence several senior bowlers. He also took his first league wicket for the club. Shah (3/30) bowled the difficult death overs with great control and guile, picking up three wickets as Preston were forced to hit out. A fabulous catch by Andy Buddery was a high-point of a good fielding display, also notable for a tidy display from Chris Griggs behind the stumps.

Although the margin of victory was only 15 runs, Edinburgh South were in truth always in control of the chase, and could be proud to complete a solid victory against skillful and friendly opposition.
