Edinburgh South Cricket Club 3rd XI v Broomhall 3rds on Sat 04 Jun 2011 at 1300
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 158 runs

Match report The 3rds continued their intimidating form with a big victory over Broomhall 3rds at the Gyle.

Deciding whether to bat or bowl is crucial decision , and Kingsley carefully weighed various factors including the strong easterly breeze, the opposition's recent form, the abrasive outfield, the fact his side only had a single left-handed batsmen, the high water table at the Gyle and its impact on the swinging ball, and the strong performance of the SNP in the recent Scottish Parliamentary elections. However, he lost the toss, and Edinburgh South were put into bat.

The outstanding Will George again dominated the innings, with an knock remarkably similar to the previous week's. He added 54 for the first wicket with Peter Fyfe (17), remaining stern in defence and severe in attack. His 78 came in 83 balls, and included ten boundaries. Only Blair Parlane has scored more runs in the league for the club this season.

South wobbled in the middle of their innings, slipping from 54/0 to 68/4. Mark Kirby had been unavailable in recent weeks with his job at Prestwick Airport, and when he came to the crease South were stuck taxing on the runway at 133/6. But Mark's unbeaten half-century - his first for the club - allowed South to take-off, as 64 runs came in the last eight overs. At one point, Mark was on 9 off 23 balls, but he scored 49 off his final 27 deliveries, six of which were hit for four. The cabin crew of Calum, Ross and Pete minced ineffectually, but Mark's hitting allowed South to land safely at a destination of 216/9.

The Broomhall chase was immediately in trouble thanks to a remarkable spell of 5-5-0-3 from Vishnu. In this league season, more than 40% of his overs have been maidens, conceding barely two runs per over. He should invest in the stock market, such is his understanding of economy, and he certainly judged Pryce correctly when he sold him a slower ball, the first of his three top-order wickets.

Kingsley (1/37) was far more profligate, sending down eight overs of expensive filth. Several players missed catches from his bowling: their names do not appear here, but have not been forgotten. Ross (3/16) and Calum (2/2) cleaned up the rest, both taking their first league wickets, as South completed the win. The friendly Broomhall side, could be encouraged, however, by their range of impressive young players, not least their excellent and unlucky seamer Peter Pryce.
