Edinburgh South Cricket Club 3rd XI v Largo 4ths on Sat 25 Jun 2011 at 1300
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 61 runs
Match report
The 3rds beat a spirited Largo 4ths in a compelling encounter on a soggy Meadows. Celebrations organised for Armed Forces Day made travel to the ground difficult for some, but ultimately it was Edinburgh South's fighting spirit that won the day.
Fitting of a First World War reenactment, the Meadows offered trench warfare conditions as Captain Kingsley won a crucial toss to gain first use of a muddy, deteriorating pitch. Intelligently marshalled by General Willie Anderson, Largo offered strong resistance, gunning down Fyfe and Griggs. Rather than hold a minute's silence, Kingsley thought it best to honour the fallen with a sombre, dignified 50 minute duck, as each of the 41 balls in a strokeless innings allowed onlookers time for quiet reflection.
Nic, making his 3rd XI debut, began the counter-insurgency, hitting 7 fours in his 38, like the performing Red Arrows, making use of the aerial route. Ross Welsh, with an unbeaten 57, his club best, played the crucial innings to revive South from a Dunkirk-esque 28/5 to a commanding 156/9. He received good support from comrades-in-arms Ian (15) and Gerry (7*).
The City of Lincoln, the famed Lancaster bomber, and several fighter jets flew overhead as Largo began their reply. But it was catches, not bombs, that were dropped as South struggled to lay seige to the Largo openers. Dakin and Ritchie added a patient 67 for the first wicket, scoring almost half of the required runs. But an old soldier like Gerry Dodson (3/15) knows the value of patience, and once he had pierced the Largo defences, the tide turned.
After the opening partnership, all ten Largo wickets fell for just 28 runs. As Gerry flummoxed the batsmen, steady support bowling in tricky conditions accounted for the rest, with Calum (3/23) and Madan (2/6) cleaning up the tail. Edinburgh South continued their unbeaten campaign, knowing they had won the battle, if not yet the war.
