Edinburgh South Cricket Club 3rd XI v Queensbury CC on Sat 02 Jul 2011 at 13.00
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Lost by 14 runs
Match report
The 3rds narrowly lost an enjoyable friendly against Queensbury cricket club, a team touring from London, in exceptionally sunny weather on the Meadows.
Batting first by mutual consent, the Queensbury openers were not distracted by the neighbouring 'Taste of Edinburgh' food festival, instead tucking in a range of pies generously provided by the host bowlers. In sweltering conditions, support for the bowlers was inconsistent, as the fielders' attentions wandered to consider the various sunbathers and passers-by. Mark was unlucky to go unrewarded in an excellent opening spell, but Peter Fyfe (3/25) was able to pull things back in his spell.
The home side used 10 bowlers, including a presidential spell of off-spin worthy of his office from Bill, a tidy stint from the much-improved Peter Geoghegan, and Shah (2/11) who bowled well at the death. In 35 overs, Queensbury set South 194.
Responding positively, Shah(49) was unfortunate to miss out on a half-century, hitting ten fours as he and his opening partner Kingsley added 67 in ten overs. Kingsley (36), who hit 6 fours in his club best score, added another 47 with Mark before the latter was caught at mid-off. Skipper Kingsley - a keen observer of fate and predestination - sensed that it was not to be for incoming batsmen Calum, and so decided to compassionately euthanise him by calling him through for an improbable single. Chris (21) and Peter Fyfe (20) added late impetus, as South scrambled to stay ahead of the rate, but as three further run outs occurred, they fell 15 runs short.
