Edinburgh South Cricket Club 2nd XI v Preston Village on Sat 11 Aug 2012 at 13:00
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Lost by 18 runs
Match report
ESCC2s lost to Preston Village by 18 runs. Not a startling headline. But there is more to it than that. Few cricketers at our level ever score a century, so when, like buses, three turn up together, it is worthy of note.
PV were asked to bat, and they started normally enough, reaching 46 for 2 in the 13th over. From then though, Dave King (100 not out) and Matt Boyd (112 not out) stole the show. Their undefeated 207 partnership was most impressive, albeit frustrating to the unfortunate ESCC2s attack. Gus took the opportunity to tell us that he bowled all of our five maidens. Shane maintained excellent accuracy and control, and although wicketless like most of us, conceded little more than three an over.
Facing a daunting target of 254, ESCC2s lost Jim to the third ball of the innings. He was man enough to agree that he had made a “confident leave” to a ball which took his off stump with late swing. Shane started nicely, but it was Praveen who immediately imposed himself. His first 22 runs came in boundaries, and so we dared to dream. A sharp slip catch by centurion Boyd accounted for Shane, leaving Praveen to control proceedings. His partners’ contributions may have been small, but their support was vital to the cause. Notably Paul Murphy made just 1 in a 29 run fourth wicket stand, and similarly Paul Wilson (11 of 53 for the sixth) and James (8 of 61 for the seventh) stuck around usefully. At 92 for 5 the prospect was bleak, but Praveen’s dominance against the odds took us to 206 for 7 when he got out. His 132 included 4 sixes and 16 fours. James and Gus scored at a reasonable rate, but the task was just too great.
Each of the main batsmen had their slices of luck, and profited judiciously from the very short boundary on one side. However they are all to be congratulated on their exceptional achievements.
