Edinburgh South Cricket Club Lost by 49 Runs
Match report
A week later than intended the newly formed Fourth Eleven made their league debut. The side had Dale Cooper as stand-in captain for Peter Geoghegan (attending a wedding)and two players making their first appearance for the club.
Preston Village won the toss and decided to bat on a slow damp strip on Meadows No. 3. Sahil Momin claimed the first wicket for the fledgling side when Kenny Black thumped the ball into Ross Welsh's hands at cover with 81 on the board from 18.1 overs. At the 20 over drinks interval the visitors were 88 for 1 and the slow bowling combination of Bill Polson and Graham Smith put something of a brake on the scoring rate during the next 9 overs with claiming a wicket. The next success came when a direct hit from cover by Eric Fraser on the stumps at the bowler's end ran out Dermot Gilbert, who had batted in masterly fashion. Ben Lee claimed two wickets in the closing overs, one a catch by 'keeper Darren Young, who made ground to hold on to a skied top edge, and the other by clean bowling the visiting number five.
The fourths reply did not start well but from 2 for 2 in the third over it did not plunge into collapse mode thanks to a positive partnership of 62 for the third wicket by Paul Wilson and Sahil Momin which led to a half-way tally of 70 for 3. Paul was stumped soon after the drinks interval but the middle and lower order added 75 in the second twenty overs including encouraging double figure contributions from Eric Fraser and Graham Smith.
"A good afternoon's cricket" was the verdict on our opening league match in which the difference between the sides was the vital innings by the visiting skipper and the contrast between our concession of 39 in wides and no balls against our opponents gift to us of 25 under these headings.
