Edinburgh South Cricket Club 4th XI v Morton 3rds on Sat 09 Jun 2012 at 13:00
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets
Match report
The wicket on the new square at Liberton High School was damp and well grassed so it was no surprise that visiting captain David Belton put the Fourths in to bat. Runs were hard to come by and only Graham batted with any fluency in the first 20 overs. He lost his wicket when mid off, reaching upwards, caught a firmly struck drive. As the visitors had grassed several easier chances this was unfortunate for us. Having opened the innings captain Peter had put up a stern defence for 22.3 overs before suffering an unusual dismissal - hit wicket off a delivery called as a wide by the umpire. Dale and Michael added 21 for the 6th wicket and the last pair of Dom and Bill batted through the last five overs for the addition of 12 to ensure that we used the full quota of 40 overs.
Ian and Dom kept the Morton openers quiet in the early overs and the first wicket was claimed when Michael leapt to make a good catch from a mis-timed drive off Ian's bowling. The General was brought into the attack for the tenth over and he struck with his first ball which Morton's no.3 bat dragged on to his stumps. Ian gained a well deserved second wicket with the last ball of his alloted 8 overs building pressure on Morton's left handed opener with testing deliveries. He resorted to attempting a big hit which he skied to point where Dom held the catch. A catch by Darren a silly mid off gave the General his second wicket but assured batting by No. 4, Aravind Karimathu had taken his team to the brink of victory when he became the General's third victim thanks to a good leg side catch by 'keeper Eric. This brought us a third bowling point to reward a good bowling performance well supported by the fielders. (For the record Aravind's innings contained the only four of the match.)
