Dalgety Bay v Edinburgh South Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 05 May 2012 at 1pm
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by one run

Match report The 3s completed their second victory of the season by the narrowest possible margin, in a game that was closely fought throughout.

Last week against Largo, the 3s batted first, and batted carefully, reasoning that a modest total would be defensible. The same plan was adopted here, with similar results. Andy fell in the first over, but Ayyapan (16) - back from exile in Huddersfield - and Mark (19) added 44 in a 15 over 2nd wicket partnership. The loss of both along with Hiren gave Dalgety Bay momentum going into drinks, with excellent disciplined bowling from Picksley, Pearson, Coleman and especially the left-arm spinner Newson.

Vishnu, supported by Colin, rebuilt the innings with an excellent 39. He began cautiously with 10 off his first 37 balls, but later hit three fours and ran well to add important runs. A critical innings was played by Eoghan, who hit 23 at almost a run a ball, batting with skill and intelligence to rotate the strike and enable South to add 67 off the last ten overs.

Dalgety began pursuit of the target with purpose, adding 35 for the first wicket and 50 for the second. Kirkman (45) and Newson (31) are surely amongst the best batsmen in Division 8, and it took several bowling changes before Kingsley removed them himself. South, having won games from similar positions before, sensed their chance, and Ayyapan whilst initially a little wayward, then found his length and bowled two middle-order batsmen for ducks. Dawson, in particular, was unfortunate to receive a simply perfect delivery that did no more that gently brush his off bail. Two catches then seemed to have put the game beyond Dalgety, with James holding on to a firmly hit drive at cover, and Mark brilliantly taking a running catch inches from the long-off boundary. Price and Pearson, however, edged the home side closer to the finish line, leaving South to defend five to win off the final over, and eventually two (or one for the tie) off the final ball. James held his nerve, however, and the closest of victories was completed.

South were pleased to complete the win, and were grateful to their hosts - both for their flexibility in altering the venue of the fixture, and in their warm hospitality and sporting conduct. Umpiring fairly and playing with good spirits is all the more admirable in such a close game.
