Holy Cross Academicals 3rds v Edinburgh South Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 27 Apr 2013 at 1300
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets
Match report
After a heavy hail storm on Friday, the ground was pretty damp with a few puddles towards the boundary. But there was a strong breeze, and conditions gradually improved as the game progressed.
HX 3s decided to bat on winning the toss, sparing Ian the decision. Ross Byford’s first ball in East League cricket claimed a wicket, and he bowled usefully thereafter. Indeed all six bowlers had their moments, with Brendon bowling very economically. Several aerial shots fell tantalisingly just beyond reach in the field. A couple of run outs also helped ESCC 3’s cause, with one spectacular direct hit from Luke - still prone after a diving stop - disconcerting their most senior citizen, whose incessant tobacco consumption just may have taken the edge off his sprint for the safety of the crease. The other wickets were widely shared. 117 for 8 in 40 overs was a good target for us to aim for.
ESCC 3s openers, Ross Welsh and Calum, faced HX 3s’ most experienced bowlers Ellis and McGill, with their slow and slower opening attack. Very sensibly, they treated each ball carefully, until Ross eventually succumbed. Brendon started slowly, but soon accelerated. He reached fifty (his first apparently) including 7 fours, with Calum content to play the supporting role. Their 73 run partnership in 20 overs seized the initiative, before Peter (14*) provided a late boost to get us to the winning line with three overs to spare. Brendon’s eventual 70 not out was the big difference between the sides. But the mature manner with which all the batsmen approached their task was pleasing to see.
This was an excellent start to the league campaign.
