Edinburgh South Cricket Club 3rd XI v Tranent 2nds on Sat 11 May 2013 at 1300
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets
Match report
Wet weather was clearing, but that left a chilly windy afternoon at Liberton. The pitch was very soft, and always likely to cut up and cause unpredictable bounce.
Ian won the toss for a change, and asked ten man Tranent2s to bat. Colin, returning from his latest sabbatical, immediately found his range, and bagged the first three wickets very cheaply. Our erstwhile South Sudan correspondent Pete bowled his first spell tidily into the wind with no luck, but later needed just one ball to claim the final scalp. Two wickets each for Brendon and Gerry, with one for Ross, ensured the spoils were shared around. The keenness and supportive chat in the field was good, with Naveen and Graham’s strong throwing particularly catching this jealous geriatric eye. Mind you, Tranent2s’ total could have been much less if even some of the missed catches had been held. That said, most were difficult chances, with a couple of steeplers going down in the blustery wind. However the most impressive of Ian’s three catches was a very slick low one handed grab behind the stumps off Gerry.
Chasing 90 to win was quite challenging in the conditions, also bearing in mind the same opponents’ comprehensive demolition of ESCC4s last week. But it did seem achievable after our recent successes. Tranent2s read the pitch well and intelligently started with a tight ring of fielders round the bat. Gerry succumbed early to one that popped off his leading edge. Calum played very cautiously, surviving till the 17th over for 10, by which time Graham (25*) had settled in after Brendon had come and gone. That brought Ian in to join Graham. Their undefeated fourth wicket partnership of 58 in 13 overs made all the difference, with Ian’s 34 not out taking control. In the tricky conditions this was a fine captain’s effort.
Mukherjee’s 47 plus his very tidy bowling made him Tranent2s’ standout performer. But this was another good team effort by ESCC3s, showing that there is useful depth in the club at this level.
