Match report
A cloudless day with a mild though increasing south west wind made St Andrews a superb backdrop for cricket. In fact this ranks high in our experience of enjoyable games – except for the result.
Gerry won the toss, and ESCC 3s bowled first. As usual Colin hit the spot straight away, but it was Ross who took the first two wickets in two balls at a score of 16. Gradually the initiative slipped away from us, as Messrs Dakin and Caddick scored the runs which made the difference for Largo 4s in the end, taking advantage of the comparatively few loose balls offered to them. Peter Russian made a welcome return for us, and bowled a very tidy spell mid innings. Fourteen year old Tom Dean started with wicket off his first ball, a full toss on middle stump which bowled the exuberant receiver. His spell was very economical. Ewan held a hot catch at short mid wicket to give Gerry his solitary wicket. At the end, Colin and Gerry confined Largo 4s to just 8 runs in the last six overs, as four more wickets fell. 103 for 8 looked a reachable target as we enjoyed the sumptuous tea on offer.
Sadly though, from the ESCC 3s perspective, there were few highlights in our reply. Peter Fyfe played a few positive shots, before becoming the first victim of a very impressive schoolboy attack. Collectively youngsters Baddeley, Cumming and Caton (aggregate age 38 years) took 7 for 29 in 16 overs. One or two deliveries kept low, but that was the same when we bowled also. Generally their accuracy was very impressive, making the batsmen play nearly every ball. None of us reached double figures, but Tom’s nine singles matched Peter’s initial effort.
As is the way with defeats, we were left with a few “if only”s. That geriatric mid off could (a generation ago) have moved a bit nearer a couple of catches; a handful of loose overs could have been prevented; a silly run out should have been avoided; and a bit more application when batting might have improved our score.
Largo 4s deserve to bask in the warm glow of success, after we all enjoyed our day in the sun.
