Scudding grey clouds but virtually none of the forecast rain set the scene for this internal club mega match, which was played ten a side.

Ian won the toss, and asked ESCC 4s to bat. The pitch was erratic and lively, troubling batsmen from the start, so it was little surprise that the bowlers prospered. Reasonable line and length, using the undulations of the pitch, was all it took to induce mistakes. Vishal played a few attacking shots, before being third out on 12. Andrew chanced his arm later on, top scoring with 9. Eoghan bowled his full spell, claiming three wickets, with Brendon and Adam each taking two. Your correspondent always casts a quizzical eye over new slow left armers appearing on the scene (in case his place is in jeopardy), and noted that Punit bowled neatly, achieving several fizzing spinners leaving the right hand batsmen. Gerry enjoyed a rare formal confrontation bowling to Bill – fittingly, and perhaps unsurprisingly, this clash of at least 120 years of combined cricketing experience resulted in a nil-nil draw after three balls. ESCC 4s innings of 35 lasted just over 21 overs in total.

Ross and Peter set about the target sensibly, with Dominic’s nippy offerings needing care. Andrew achieved some useful spin on the helpful track. However the runs were soon knocked off in the fourteenth over without loss.

From ESCC 3s’ perspective, this was another win to keep us in contention in the league, albeit at the expense of our friends.
