Match report
This fresher breezy day was welcome after recent heat, but it later turned cool as mist started rolling in. We played on the same pitch as last week, but the wind had turned completely, now from the east.

SMRH 4s were asked to bat, and lost a wicket in Brendon’s first over. Then a rapid, almost suicidal assault took them to 50 in the 8th over. But three overs later, at 59 for 5, the impetus had swung round, with young Mikey achieving a double wicket maiden in his first over for us. However we reckoned without Noah Horne’s powerful first century, which included 18 fours over the fast outfield. ESCC 3s’ bowling lacked some of the potency of recent weeks, but success was shared around, as was the punishment. Late order support for Noah helped SMRH 4s reach a challenging 211 for 7 in 40 overs.

Ross succumbed early in the ESCC 3s reply, but Calum and Brendon accumulated runs easily. Calum favoured his dab through gully, while Brendon prospered with well timed pulls and drives. 60 for 1 at 10 overs became 103 for 1 at drinks. With wickets in hand, some of us dared to dream. What fools! The next two balls claimed Brendon and Ian, setting the scene for a collapse which was only briefly postponed by an interesting cameo from Mikey. The run rate quickly went out of reach, with a couple of run outs compounding the problems of a tail comprising great age and youthful inexperience.

We were well beaten on the day, but remain top of Division 9 by a whisker. Two thirds through the season, any of the top five teams still have realistic promotion hopes.
