Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 32 runs
Match report
The surrounding crowd kept growing in the Meadows on this warm breezy day. But few watched us, as drummers, a horn player and scattered wisps of barbecue smoke punctuated the summer afternoon.
Tranent 2s asked ESCC 3s to bat, giving Calum and promoted opener Brendon first chance to enjoy the fast outfield on Meadows 3. Yes, really! 103 for no wicket at the 20 over drinks break was a great start, and the opening partnership reached 145 before Brendon was lbw for 74. Ian (19) provided further support to Calum as he approached his first ESCC fifty. Statistical interest was at fever pitch to see whether the innings total could get to 200 with the burgeoning input from that unseen contributor, extras, before Calum reached his milestone. For the record, Calum just made it first, and his 56 was a model of patient accumulation, without which our good total of 212 for 4 would have been much harder to achieve. The last few runs came from young Robert’s bat, making his ESCC debut just before his 12th birthday, alongside the venerable Jim, whose asterisk on its own justified him donning his whites for the umpteenth time!
Tranent 2s reply was equally prolific early on, reaching 120 when their second wicket fell after 19 overs. Aiden Hoenigmann hit 11 fours in his 47. But ESCC 3s bowling was generally better controlled, and succeeded in subduing the Tranent 2s scoring rate. Brendon took a couple of wickets late in his spell, helping to start a late order collapse as risks had to be taken. At that stage the accuracy of both Colin and 13 year old Richard was rewarded, with three and two wickets respectively. A critical eye observed one or two dropped catches, but would also confirm that this geriatric correspondent is getting no quicker at bending down in the field.
In the end this was a well worked win, but Tranent 2s produced a commendable response, until the required rate became too demanding.
