Edinburgh South Cricket Club 3rd XI v Glenrothes 3rds on Sat 10 Aug 2013 at 1300
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 129 runs
Match report
No heatwave conditions at Newfield this week, as a stiffish breeze whipped some big grey clouds past us at times. ESCC 3s were asked to bat. Captain Calum began serenely enough, opening with Brendon, until the latter sparked into top gear with three fours in successive balls off Dave Snook. Next over he played on to his first ball though, for what turned out to be our top score of 31. Tom joined Calum, and although their partnership only produced one boundary, they added 44 in nine overs with good placement and positive running, before each got out for 23 – 91 for 3. After Jamie’s quick 8, a mid innings collapse followed. But Nagendran (20*) and young Robert (27) punished some variable change bowling to bring ESCC 3s towards a respectable total of 168 for 7.
Any hopes Glenrothes 4s may have had at the start of their innings were strangled by a magnificent spell of bowling from Brendon. He took the first six wickets and needed no help in the field, with three caught and bowled, one lbw and two bowled, for figures of 8-5-5-6. Remaining wickets were shared round. Notable was Richard, who bowled five consecutive maidens for his one wicket; Jamie’s 6-4-5-1, with nothing scored off the bat; and that geriatric old leftie momentarily coming to life with a balletic (by his standards) one handed caught and bowled, after previously dropping two chances.
This was a very satisfying win. Several useful batting contributions were followed by Brendon’s amazing bowling effort. Various youngsters on both sides showed up encouragingly – always good to see.
