Holy Cross Academicals 3rds v Edinburgh South Cricket Club 4th XI on Sat 22 Jun 2013 at 1300
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Lost by 2 wickets

Match report Another lost toss and the Fourths were again put in to bat. Bill went in first, determined to play an anchor role, and the first three partnerships all reached double figures (12, 12 and 16. The first might have been more if Kishore had not been a run out victim and although both the third and fourth wickets fell at 40 the biggest stand of the innings followed. John Petrie came back positively after a long lay off with 21 in partnership of 23 for the fifth wicket before the anchor dragged his back foot to be out stumped. However, 63/5 from 23.1 was an improvement on many of our previous scores at a similar stage in other fixtures. John continued to mix attacking intent with solid defence before mis-timing a drive to be out for 34.( 5 x 4 and 2 x 6 - off successive balls).Dale had been John's last partner in a stand of 20 for the seventh wicket and he continued to add good low order runs with assistance from Punit and Peter Gill before our innings closed on 111 after 36.1 overs.
As in our in innings the first wicket was captured by means of a run out when Naveen's throw to Andy Barker was enough to gain the wicket. Punit's left arm spin soon disposed of the home captain and Peter Gill, a young guest from Carlton, quickly had the remaining opener caught behind. Holy Cross 45/3 from 13. In the course of the next few overs the home side advanced their score but Punit and Andrew Barrie did succeed in capturing further wickets until at 91 for 5 John Petrie came into the attack to bowl a maiden over despite having to cut his run from five paces to two after slipping and sustaining a leg injury. Andrew followed this with an over costing nine but including a wicket and in his next over he claimed the seventh wicket with 105 on the board. The scores were level at the end of Andrew's next over as John had continued to bowl accurately. To add to the drama John picked up an l.b.w. victim with the fourth ball of his next over but his next two were blocked. Colin McGill swept the winning single for the home side off the first ball of the next over so there was no end to our losing run - but we had been competing hard.
The final comments must be firstly to record how impressed both his new colleagues and our opponents were by the bowling of our recruit Peter Gill and to congratulate John on his successful return in which he showed that his natural sporting ability remained while also contributing hugely to the team spirit.
