Match report
This friendly was an enjoyable start to the season. It didn’t rain, and the sun even appeared fitfully – big improvements on 2012. However a strongish cool wind off the river challenged those bowling into it.
With ESCC 3s inserted, Calum and Gerry started carefully, before Brendon wasted no time in scoring 10. New captain Ian Ross played our best innings, finding the middle of his bat immediately and using his feet intelligently, to score 24 including three fours. Unfortunately a late collapse brought the innings to an early conclusion on 66.
Mark took DB’s first wicket before a run was scored. From then though, the match slipped away from us, with some good stroke play taking advantage of the early season cobwebs in ESCC 3s’ attack.
In terms of a formal result, we lost by 8 wickets after 14 overs. But by agreement the game continued to allow everyone to get more match practice. Ian Irving bowled very economically, and Brendon showed his versatility, each with no luck. Gerry took two wickets in successive balls, courtesy of a smart stumping by Ian Ross and a neat slip catch by Brendon. Seven bowlers were tried. Over all, there were too many loose balls, which were properly punished.
That old chap at mid off gave a demonstration of “cloud fielding” (possibly akin to cloud computing, where stuff seems to happen but you don’t see why) because he had difficulty bending down fast enough to stop several good shots reaching the boundary, despite his presence in the vicinity. On the other hand, Mark made a number of impressive run saving stops.
Hopefully less brittle batting, more accurate bowling, and an improvement in the field (not to forget our fair share of luck) will see better results in the season ahead.
