Watsonian 4ths v Edinburgh South Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sun 11 May 2014 at 1 p.m.
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 7 runs
Match report
A heavy downpour just at the scheduled start time, combined with a dodgy forecast, delayed the start of the game and caused a reduction to a 35 over per side game. Graham won the toss for the first time this season and chose to bat. After passing on this news, certain team members treated him to various reasons why it would have been better to have a bowl!
Following a good knock each in the opening games Ross H and Brad were sent out to open. A very sharp catch off the bowling of Sommerville at gully removed Brad in the 4th over bringing Ross Welsh to the crease. Ross W scored 11 before being bowled attempting to pull a half tracker from P.Cockburn. Ross H departed soon after, bowled by the same bowler who had found his length by this point and was looking dangerous. Graham and Gourav accelerated the scoring rate, Graham hitting exclusively to the offside while Gourav was able to play a wider variety of shots including an excellent pull shot for four off Sommerville. Gourav was then out caught by the same gully fielder for 20 and Graham followed not much later caught behind for 32 off the excellent bowling of young Reid. Kunal was then very unfortunate to be run out without facing a ball. This left the score on 85-6 with just over 10 overs remaining. But then Ash Kumar and Sunny Vivek produced what would turn out to be the match winning partnership. Sunny hit an enormous 6 over long on while left hander ash Ash hit a number of very good boundaries including a 6 off the last ball to leave himself on 47*, Sunny on 29* and the final total a respectable 170. We felt this was a good score although with the short boundary at one end there was potential for it to be chased down if Watsonians batted well.
Tea was provided by Watsonians in the club house and was fantastic, a nice chicken pasta followed by lemon sorbet!
Ash and Pete opened the bowling, with Ash in particular bowling very quickly which was painful on the hands of stand in wicketkeeper Gourav! Ash was extremely unlucky not to get a wicket in his seven overs, with a number of edges sailing through vacant regions for boundaries. Pete took the first wicket, bowling opener Brian for 1, this was followed by a long and successful partnership between Williams and captain Borthwick which took the score on to 80 before finally it was broken by Kunal who bowled Williams. With Watsonians needing approximately 7 runs an over they attempted to pick up the scoring rate. Borthwick was removed LBW by PK and Ash effected two run outs with his throws from the deep as Watsonians pushed for extra runs. This left Fiona Rae, who finished on a very good 25*, to push Watsonians towards the target. They ended up requiring 14 from the last two overs. Pete bowled the penultimate over, conceding just 3 runs and the captain bowled the final over also for 3 runs leaving Watsonians just shy of their target.
Another good all round performance in a close game, with some good middle order batting and bowling which wasn't always rewarded. The figures of Gerry, Dom and Ash in particular do not really reflect how well all three bowled. Also, a number of catchable shots fell between fielders, likely due to erratic field settings by the captain, and on another day some of these could have been wickets.
Credit also to the very good young Watsonians bowlers, who dealt well with a slippery ball early on, and the batting of Borthwick, Williams and Rae which very nearly got them over the line.
