Match report
A cloudy day threatening showers at Gilvenbank Park cleared later into clear blue sky – perfect for cricket. ESCC4s welcomed the Blood and Ede dads and lads, as Peter Fyfe won the toss and decided to bowl.
GCC4s openers negotiated the initial attack for a stand of over 50, before Bob Gooday’s crafty spell brought the breakthrough. Reaching well over 100 for 1 in quick time, GCC4s’ progress looked ominous, with number 3 “Bod” Hutchison and Ross Mearns batting confidently until Bob trapped Mearns lbw for 54. However something of a collapse ensued, as the one and only Bradley Bonthrone suddenly produced a hat trick out of nowhere, sandwiched between Gerry Dodson’s two loopy wickets. Hutchison watched all this from the other end, before receiving a bit of late support, until Miles Ede’s two lbws and a sharp run out left him stranded on 82 not out.
Chasing 194 to win was always going to be challenging for ESCC4s’ relatively inexperienced line up. Peter and Miles wasted little time making 49 for the first wicket, before each then fell for 24. Bradley chipped in with 14, but was then run out to some sharp fielding as he chased a third run. Ross Henderson presided over our very own mid order collapse, as we slumped to 90 for 8 in 26 overs. Gerry then joined Ross for what GCC’s match report describes as “possibly the most uneventful 14 overs in history” – no doubt reflecting their frustration at not taking any more wickets. From ESCC4s’ angle, this was an undefeated 9th wicket partnership of 59, taking us to respectability if not victory. Ross played with growing confidence for his 47 not out, as Gerry (18 no) tried to give him most of the strike. Realistically we were never going to win the game, but 149 for 8 was a reasonable outcome on the day.
All our youngsters got to bowl and bat, and will return with greater success in future. Your geriatric correspondent could only admire their youthful speed in the field!
