Holy Cross 3rds v Edinburgh South Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 02 May 2015 at 1pm
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets

Match report
Winter jackets, fleeces, thermals and woolly hats were the favoured apparel amongst the cricketing cognoscenti at Inverleith Park for this early season encounter. However, looking on the bright side, the strong easterly wind limited any precipitation to light flying drizzle until the last few overs.

Stand in captain Gerry won the toss and asked ten man HX3s to bat. Young Owen claimed the first wicket before conceding a run, and completed his impressive four over opening spell for just 3 runs. Meanwhile Jeremy bowled steadily without luck. Your geriatric correspondent then took a quick couple of wickets, courtesy first of umpire McGill’s considered lbw decision, then a very smart stumping by Jim to remove our old friend, opener Mahmood Din. 22 for 3. But Gerry removed himself when he became expensive, not merely as an example to others, but in line with his pre match team talk. We had plenty of bowlers to try. Bradley for once was almost speechless at being asked to replace him, but promptly produced an action packed spell, taking 2 for 32 in just four overs. The highlight was undoubtedly a great catch on the square leg boundary by Rahul to remove top scorer Donaldson for 26. At 20 overs HX3s score had sped to 68 for 5. Karamjit and then Rahul both bowled excellent spells, deserving more than one wicket each. We failed to close out the HX3 innings, but accurate bowling and keen fielding contained the efforts of Keith Geddes and Colin McGill to “wag the tail”. Their final 118 for 8 gave promise of an interesting reply.

A warm interlude for tea up the road at Arboretum was very welcome, giving time to sort the ES3 batting order. Openers Jim and Owen “selected themselves” by announcing earlier that they each had to leave before the likely end of the match. Owen shaped up well until he lost one bail to Geddes. Brad and Jim built slowly at first, but ran well together until Brad failed to persuade Jim to take a second run, and was stranded for 5. Jim moved serenely to 13 before giving two catch chances in the same Geddes over to Mahmood in the slips, the second of which he held. At 29 for 3 in the 14th over, our reply could have turned precarious. It took Jeremy a bit of time to get his eye in, but Rahul’s confident scoring soon rubbed off on his partner. Jeremy’s late burst took him to 41*, just past Rahul’s excellent 38*. Their undefeated 4th wicket partnership made 91, with the last 50 coming in about 7 overs sweeping ES3s to a second successive win.
