Match report
Strong sun on arrival at Inch Park suggested that we may get some summer this year after all, but it was a long way short of a heatwave. Unfortunately we were also a couple of Rahuls – and others – short of our strongest side, due to patchy availability through the club. No picnic, then, hosting useful mid table Tranent 2s (TCC2).
TCC2’s Paul Dance called correctly to beat Jim’s toss, and asked us to bat. The arti bounce was keeping low, so Bradley and Karamjit started carefully. TCC2 opened with Mukherjee and Barrett, with the former’s energetic offerings requiring particularly close attention. However the latter’s third over was a triple wicket maiden, suddenly exposing ESCC3’s inexperienced batting line up. 14 for 3. One beacon of hope stood out, in the shape of Luke, joining us just to bat, due to an injury preventing him bowling. But 15 for 4 soon became soon 28 for 5, before Jim and Luke came together. Both batted positively until Jim was adjudged lbw, bringing Dom to the crease. Luke soon departed for an excellent 32, leaving Dom’s bat to do the talking. He scored an invaluable 22, belying his erstwhile self-effacing opinion of his own batting, and proceeded to shepherd the tail. The aforementioned tail comprised 13 year old Owen, followed by the 150 year old Dodson / Russell tenth wicket partnership. Reaction to ESCC3’s eventual 115 all out was mainly relief after early setbacks, but we must also thank extras for top scoring with 34.
Early wickets would be our only route to a win, and Dom duly obliged with one in the first over. After that, TCC2s batted very positively. Mukherjee attacked from the start, and the score reached 35 by the fifth over. Dom then removed the second opener, thanks to a good catch by Brad (yes!) at mid on, then Gerry coaxed Mukherjee to spoon a top edge to square leg, where Dom – now seemingly in all the action – pouched it safely. Probably the less said about the next ten overs the better, as Picken (41) and Srinivasan (35*) added 63 for the fourth wicket. Jim tried varying the bowling, hoping that changes would disrupt the batsmen, but instead they took full advantage of any wayward deliveries on offer. Dom broke that partnership with his first ball on return to the attack, and secured his fourth scalp when Jim took a smart catch behind the stumps. But Srinivasan’s fourteen in the final over sealed a convincing win for TCC2s.
As defeats go, this was an enjoyable game. Luke’s batting and Dom’s great all round performance were our highlights, and some spirited chasing and throwing in the field was good to see. We must hope for the return of our missing stars for next week.
