Match report
A surprisingly sunny, though not especially warm day for this one. I lost the toss for the first time this season but Clacks decided to have a bat anyway. The Clacks captain had brought 12 players with him so had the luxury of a sub fielder! What a place Alloa must be if they can get 12 for an away game an hour away. We can only dream of such things!
Shine and Dom opened the bowling and each removed one opener. Shine bowled Oliver with one that nipped back and Dom took an excellent catch off his own bowling to get K. Hutchison who had been hitting the ball hard. The scoring rate slowed as the batsmen struggled to get the left armers Gerry and Jeremy away. Gerry got a wicket during this spell, trapping Aitken lbw. I decided to take the final over before drinks, and this filth brought a wicket but it was probably the worst wicket of all time with the batsman Rasul attempting to hit a massive leg side wide but over balancing and stumbling on to his stumps. Oops. Karamjit and Prabhneet took the next overs, Karamjit got a wicket then Dom picked up the next one, caught behind by Jim who then took another catch off Jeremy to dismiss Carman for 44. The final wicket to fall was a stumping by Jim off Gerry as Clacks looked to accelerate. Clacks finished on 144 for 8 off their 40 overs. Not bad, game very much in the balance.
We had tea at the clubhouse with the 2s and Largo 2s. Ian Ross had baked cakes, and although I didn't have any I'm told they were good. But we didn't have any milk and this caused some disappointment.
I decided to open the batting with Karamjit and the first ball from Tom Hutchison reared up off a length and smacked me on the thumb. This hurt quite a bit and, following a visit to the minor injuries unit on Sunday it would later transpire that the thumb was actually broken. However showing the true true grit of a captain I carried on batting. It was reminiscent of my namesake batting with a broken hand in Sydney, or a flu-ridden Michael Jordan in the 97 NBA Finals or... err well not really; what actually happened was that I slogged 3 fours in the next over before gloving one down the leg side to the keeper. This was the second wicket to fall after Karamjit had been bowled for 0. Peter (4) and Bradley (3) hung around but were bowled by Hutchison and Rasul respectively. Shine (8) and Jeremy (12) put on the beginnings of a nice partnership, Shine batting particularly carefully, but were both bowled by Rasul. Kevin scored 1 before being bowled by Tom Hutchison. At this stage we were in a lot of trouble on 62 for 7, but a partnership of 38 between Jim and Dom took us to 100 at which point Jim (22) was caught behind off the bowling of Ali. Some top batting from Dom and Prabhneet got us to 119 with 5 overs to go. Dom and Gerry got us to needing 10 to win from the final over. Although Dom smashed a four on the penultimate ball, he was unable to repeat the trick on the final ball leaving us agonisingly short.
Good bowling and fielding from everyone (except me) and a lower order fightback from Jim, Dom, Prabhneet and Gerry very nearly got us there. Oh well, another good game!
