Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 9 wickets

Match report Editor's note - significant changes have been made to the below report in order to have it pass the rigorous decency standards of an ESCC . Nevertheless I may have missed something, in which case I apologise and please let me know so I can alter it. Anyone who wishes to see the unedited version (not for the easily offended) please get in touch. 'Thanks' go to Gareth for the report.

What could be charitably referred to as "unforeseen circumstances" resulted in this fixture being played away from the welcoming bosom of Inch Park. Instead, the merry band of 3's found themselves suckling from the unfamiliar teat of Cavalry Park, somewhere in Edinburgh I'm unaware of. The teats may have been unfamiliar, but the match situation was as familiar as ever, as we found ourselves (and our sleeves, given the wind) bowling first, against a threadbare Corstorphine side, who nevertheless acquitted themselves with far more decorum and professionalism that the motley rag-tag assembled in the below scorecards could ever aspire to. Dispensing with the tradition of a stirring speech before our fielding efforts, Graham instead went through a rather unusual repertoire of genitalactic impersonations (his Kojak being quite a sight to behold) and suitably motivated we went out to hurl down some balls. Conditions were interesting, with short boundaries, a very strong wind, and local wildlife producing copious amounts of faeces upon the pitch. I've not seen that much since I found the section marked "Black-Eyed Peas" in HMV on Princes Street.

By virtue of being possibly the only person shorter than our illustrious skipper, young Owen Gorman was given the job of bowling uphill into the wind, and responded with an absolute pearler that swung back in like a boomerang before performing a little Shaolin upon opener Ward's off stump. At the other end Dom was going through his full repertoire of deliveries (leg-side full toss, waist-high full-toss, long-hop etc) and Duffy, justifiably appalled at such a display, meekly surrendered his wicket, presumably to write a strongly-worded letter about bowling standards to Wisden. As this played out, Hughes was in fine form, striking several clean boundaries off both opening bowlers, who nevertheless had the ball swinging. Owen was having none of this, and took an excellent steepling catch off his own bowling to dismiss the intrepid strokeplayer. Dom and Prabneet both struck, before young buck Gerry, bowling from 24 yards (i.e roughly halfway to the boundary) took his customary clean bowled to leave us* a target of 54 for the win, and most importantly THE GLORY.

Noting the short boundaries, Graham "Boycs" Smith selflessly promoted himself up the border to open, and proceeded to open The Envelope Of Batsmanship all over our collective faces. Taking a single off the sixth ball of every over, and cover-driving delightfully, he scored 46 not out of our* 57 for 1, selflessly playing himself into form ahead of next weeks top-of-the-table clash which he will be missing. A True Captain's Effort. Elsewhere, Brad made 6 quality runs before being caught, and Jim doubtless earned his captain's eternal ire by selflishly and blatantly scoring two not out, thus depriving Graeme of yet more runs. Disciplinary measures are expected.

A hearty lunch following the conclusion of the game was enjoyed by all* and we* decided to mix the teams up and have a quick (and enjoyable) bounce game. When people talk of the great cricketers, they mention Bradman, Lara, Richards, Tendulkar, Warne and Anderson. When Bradman, Lara, Richards, Tendulkar, Warne and Anderson get together to talk great cricketers*, they talk of that bounce game at a windy Cavalry Park, and the heroes* who braved the elements that day.

* - Graham
