Match report
A glorious day at Inch Park! Gareth had made the teas which promised to be great, England had just clinched an improbable Ashes victory and myself, Andy and Gareth set up the Inch Park grass wicket (like proper cricketers) for the game against Leith FAB 2s, the team immediately below us in the league. I won the toss, as per usual and again stuck with tradition and decided to bowl.
Owen and Shine took the new ball. The first breakthrough came when Owen bowled Bhandari and the second when Douglas Blood trapped the other opener lbw. This was a good start. The game then meandered for a while with Leith struggling to score quickly and us struggling to take catches, myself and Gareth being the primary culprits in that regard. The next wicket finally came courtesy of Karamjit who bamboozled the opposing captain with a series of wides before finding the magic straight ball and cleaning up his middle stump. Owen came back in to the attack and took two wickets in the over the first a great low catch by Karamjit at midwicket and the second caught at mid on. This brought Leith's new recruit S. Siddiqui to the crease and he upped the tempo of the innings with big hits and confident running and calling. Owen then claimed his first 5'fer, of many I have no doubt. Gerry then took his customary wicket thanks to a juggling catch by Jeremy and Owen got the final wicket, his 6th. Owen ended with fantastic figures of 7.3-1-23-6*. Shine, Gareth, Jeremy and Prabhneet all bowled well and were unlucky, not to get wickets of their own.
Gareth's teas were almost as good as his match reports. The openers strode out to begin our reply full of confidence, but unfortunately I returned to side a little earlier than I'd hoped having been bowled, by S.Siddiqui of course, with the first ball of the innings. I'm told it was a good delivery, I certainly didn't see it! Brad and Gareth lasted little longer, Andy looked to be in good touch but was sent to join us back on the boundary too. We were reeling a bit. Douglas managed to last a little longer but unfortunately was dismissed for 3. 34-5. Shine and Karamjit then had our first noticeable partnership taking the score up to 68 when unfortunately Shine was bowled too. Jeremy, Prabhneet and Owen all were removed for ducks, Owen getting one that barely bounced and we were 73-9. By this point Leith's 3 bowlers had bowled nearly their full allocations and the captain was forced to turn to his other options. Gerry and Karamjit kept the score moving along with a fair amount of help from the fine 'extras' and as we got closer and closer the tension began to mount. With 3 overs remaining we needed just 6 to win but disaster struck with Gerry being run out thanks to a direct hit to leave us just 3 runs short. As the Leith players celebrated on the square we were left to consider what might have been if we'd held one more catch or just survived a few more deliveries. Oh well!
Man of the match from our team was obviously Owen, but credit must also be given to Gerry (8) and Karamjit (37*) who oh so nearly got us over the line.
*It should be noted that the quality of the score book for our bowling innings is incredibly poor and as such all bowling figures are based on my best approximation!
