Match report ESCC2s’ openers Jeremy and Graham scored half of the innings total. Both played some expansive shots until Graham was bowled by promising young Chris Black for 16. Shabhir Tej bowled well too, taking 4 for 17 in his 5 overs. There were no less than 35 extras, including 25 wides, so Jeremy’s 34 was easily our top score in a total of 99 for 9.

SM4s innings set off with our former colleague Jim McLaren playing in his accustomed steady manner. Aaron and Prabhneet opened ESCC2s’ attack in very economical style, but with little luck. Meanwhile Jeremy proceeded to achieve his best bowling figures of 5 for 13, working his way through the heart of SM4s top talent. Only Alastair Wallace, who had earlier bowled a miserly spell, offered a brief hard hitting counter attack, scoring 12, until Graham made our catch of the season so far, running fully 20 yards at long on to hold on to a steepling chance coming over his shoulder off Adam's bowling. Gerry’s introduction tempted Jim McLaren to play some bolder shots, not least a reverse sweep to the boundary. So it seemed poetic justice when Jim played an inside edge onto his boot which then removed his leg bail. A short spark of life in their last wicket stand gave SM4s a glimmer of hope, until Gerry got Tej to give Jeremy a final catch. SM4s finished 6 runs adrift at 93.

Jeremy was our clear man of the match with a fine all round performance. For ESCC2s, a win, even by such a narrow margin, gets the season sparking to life at last.
