Boroughmuir 2nds v Edinburgh South Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 15 Jun 2019 at 1pm
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets
Match report
After recent rain, we found a cloudy milder day, with chance of showers, at Meggetland. Bmuir2s were undefeated, so ESCC2s - with just one narrow win so far - had no easy task ahead.
The hosts decided to bat, and openers Dickson and Docherty started confidently enough against Aaron and Prabhneet, but Docherty then sent Jeremy’s first ball, a half tracker, into Keshav’s safe hands. 33 for 1 in the tenth over turned out to be the required breakthrough. Dickson lost his next three partners cheaply, as Luke and Jeremy each got into their bowling rhythm, albeit with contrasting styles. Jeremy has adopted a slower delivery with more variety, while Luke, returning after injury and talking to himself a fair bit, worked up useful pace. Dickson top scored with 33, but then misjudged one of Jeremy’s flighted offerings to give Ian a smart stumping. At 63 for 5 in the 18th over, Bmuir2s probably hoped for some late order resistance. However our above-mentioned bowling stars kept things tight. Jeremy well deserved his three wickets, and Luke rattled through the tail, finishing his 8 overs with fine figures of 5 for 14. Luke’s catch off Abhay’s second ball closed Bmuir2s’ innings on 72.
Although apparent underdogs in this fixture, we had done some homework on our opposition. Gus McLean played several seasons for ESCC a while back, and Colin Siller had already taken six wickets twice this season, so we knew that both opening bowlers could pose potent threats. Ian decided that ESCC2’s best course was to open with Jeremy, already in good batting form this year, and Keshav – the latter with instructions to block out the opening bowlers, thus protecting our stroke makers. Jeremy’s flashing two off Gus in the first over declared his intent, but a repeat shot was caught. Vinay and Kesh played carefully, but after nurdling 6, Vinay succumbed in the tenth over. ESCC2s’ 9 for 2 compared with 33 for 1 for Bmuir2s at the same stage – not good! Graham batted positively for his 14 from the start, but undoubtedly the biggest cheer of his partnership with Keshav greeted Kesh’s first run – off the 50th ball he received! Before long, Kesh was run out, attempting to match Graham going for a second run, but his allotted role was fully accomplished. Very soon Graham holed out, but this brought Luke and Ian together. ESCC2s’ score then doubled from 30 to 60 in eight overs. The return of the opening bowlers was the chance for numerous singles, but Ian particularly impressed with some forceful straight drives as opportunities arose. His 27 not out safely brought ESCC2s home by 3 wickets, albeit with some caution as the later batsmen appeared.
Conventional wisdom would probably give man of the match to Luke for his five cheap wickets, two catches and 12 valuable runs. Ian’s batting was certainly the classiest though, and his decision to get Kesh to open the batting was a masterstroke. Kesh took one catch for the breakthrough wicket, and scored just 1 run; but his negating of the Bmuir2 opening bowlers was an essential element, creating the favourable platform for ESCC2s’ later attack.
All three are thus your aged correspondent’s “men of the match”, but this was really a fine team performance. It was an absorbing low-scoring game, and a very satisfying win in the circumstances.
Thanks to Bmuir2s for their sporting hospitality.
