Edinburgh South Cricket Club 1st XI v Edinburgh Accies 2nds on Sat 12 Jun 2021 at 1pm
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets
Match report
If, as former Surrey captain K.J. Key is reported to have said, "a captain can do nothing for his side other than to win the toss" Eoghan had a successful afternoon. Our undefeated and Division 2 leading visitors, Edinburgh Academicals 2nds. appeared surprised when they were inserted but there can be no doubt that the decision paid off. This was not quite all Eoghan did but he did pull a leg muscle in the early stages of the Acads innings and was replaced by various fielding substitutes from our 2nds v 3rds match which was taking place on the oval formerly used by Brunswick C.C. (circa 1955 to 1974) The final sub., shown as such in the East League results, was Paul Reddish and his hands played a part in our capture of two of the last three wickets.
Daniel took the first wicket with the fifth ball of the second over of the innings when Sehgal carved a catch to George at cover. Farhan took the second wicket with the fourth ball of the next over when he bowled regular run-scorer Banerjee with a swinging delivery. Judging by the reactions and comments by both Farhan and his victim, the ball was either "magic" or "unplayable". Farhan was relieved after three overs by Kiran who took the next three wickets to fall.
Opener I. Khan had been scoring frequently behind square on the off-side and Charanjit moved from slip to a position which was akin to gully where he took a smart catch. Two balls later c. Wazir b. Sankaran was again being written in the scorebook as Charanjit had moved back to an orthodox slip position to catch the new batsman off a ball from Kiran which took the edge of the bat after it had both lifted and left him. 47 for 6 after 13.2 overs. A stand of 56 had taken Acads to 103 when Dean had T. Singh caught by George at cover and with his next ball he removed S. Kabir, the other member of the partnership, the batsmen having crossed. This was by means of a well-judged catch by Paul Reddish. In the next over Daniel held an awkward swirling catch at square-leg off Harry to take the ninth wicket and our visitors were all out after Paul had made an acrobatic stop at deep mid-off and throw and throw the ball from a prone position for Dean to runout the last man Edinburgh Academicals 2nds 105 all out in 28.1 overs.
Charanjit swung and missed at the first ball of our innings in an attempt to repeat the previous week's dramatic opening so we were only 5 for no loss after 2 overs compared with 18 at the same stage against Stew-Mel. However, in the third over Charanjit had come to terms with the pitch and the bowler whose over was struck for 20 runs (6 4 . 6 . 4). This launched him on his way to a 21 ball 50 before he was caught at long-off for 59. (26 balls, 3x6s 8x4s). His first wicket partnership with Dean (5*) was 68 in 9.2 overs. Nimble running by Dean and Nab was chiefly responsible for adding 29 for the second wicket before Nab was LBW to left-arm spinner T. Singh. This brought in Doug who played out the four balls remaining in the spinner's over. Dean stroked the second of his two boundaries in the next over and Doug hit a four and a single in the following over to secure a fine win.
