Grange 3rds v Edinburgh South Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 14 Aug 2021 at 1pm
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets
Match report
For the second time this season we had a close match with Grange 3rds who started well with the bat and very well with the ball before we fought back to achieve the win.
Eoghan won the toss and put the home side in on the main square at Academy's Newfield. After an absence due to injury, Daniel resumed as Farhan's opening bowling partner but the duo had no sucess against the Stags opening pair who put on 40 in the first ten overs. (Perhaps we would be chasing around 160.) Virender came on for the eleventh over and bowled C. Swanson with his third ball and in a double change Kiran came on at the Northern end. He had to wait a little longer to take a wicket but he duly did so with the second ball of his third over when Nab took a diving catch to send back Z. Mohammed. (Grange 3rds 55 for 2 after 15.2 overs). Only one run had been added to that score when Farhan's pick up at square leg and throw to Nab saw opener O. Davies run out. South claimed their fourth wicket shortly after the 20 over sanitation break when Vipin took a catch of Virender's bowling and the fifth came five overs later when Farhan and Nab again combined to bring off their second run out dismissal. (74/5 in 25.5.)
The Grange 6th wicket pair put on 32 in 38 balls but this stand was ended when Farhan bowled G.M. Allan and he hit the stumps again four balls later (106/7 from 32.5 overs.) A direct hit run out by Kiran dismissed W. Hood after 35.4 overs. This was our last wicket but the remaining deliveries yielded the opposition only ten runs making their final total 126 for 8. A run rate of a touch over 3 an over against the 4, or more an over at which the Stags start had hinted.
Facing former Scotland under-19 cap Gordon Allan and William Hood, one of many promising young bowlers in the Grange Academy, our ten over position of 21 for 3 was much inferior to that reached by Grange 3rds in their innings. When the first and second change bowlers weighed in with a wicket each we had declined to 30 for 5 from 15.5 overs.
At this point, Eóghan walked out to join Nab who had been watching the carnage from the non-striker's end. The pair dug in, the score advanced, including a first 6 for Nab from the last ball of the 18th over. We reached 50 after 20.5 overs, the 23rd over added 12, the 25th 10 (four from the first ball followed by a single, a two and a single off each of the last 3 balls). This put us on 78 making the target from there just 48 from 15 overs.
Overs 27 and 28 produced 7 and 12 runs respectively, the latter including Nab's second 6. Although the first of these overs had been bowled by Allan, who had been brought back on, his next two were more niggardly. In the second of these, which was the last of his ration of eight he trapped Eoghan LBW for 22 (43 balls with 3 fours). In partnership with Nab, the skipper had added 78 or the 6th wicket in three balls short of 15 overs. Daniel came in at number 8 and supported Nab as he took us to victory with a third 6 off the first ball of the 33rd over before his fourth 6 brought the scores level after 33.4 overs. Nab defended the next ball and hit the winning single off the last ball of the over to give us a 4 wicket win. Nab's fine innings of 80 not out had lasted for 104 balls, it contained 5 fours and four sixes but most importantly his first 53, he had reached his half century with a boundary, had accounted for 87 of them.
What earned us this win? The bowlers had halted what might have become a galloping home run rate and when the scoreboard looked grim Nab and Eoghan had displayed, when they were required, a combination of patience, placement and power. It's a recipe that can be used again.
