Match report Vipin won the toss in our first match in Division 1 since 2017 and put Musselburgh into bat on a chilly afternoon during which rain also made conditions difficult. The winning outcome by a six wicket margin against an experienced side was brought about by some high quality batting with 8.2 overs unused. However, it could not be rated complete.
Tribute must be paid to the batters who overhauled the visiting total of 180 all out. Charanjit gave us a brisk start scoring a run-a-ball 23 which included 4 boundaries but no sixes before being caught at deep mid on. (37/1 from 6.4overs.) Nab joined Dean at the wicket and this pair put on 49 for the 2nd wicket. As if to rectify his opening parner's lack of a maximum Dean hit a fine straight 6 in his tally of 27 plus 2 fours. He fell when he edged a catch to the 'keeper. Qasim was third out with the score on 93 and a partnership of 39 followed for the fourth wicket between Nab and Naveen to which Naveen contributed 24. Nab and Siva saw us home by scoring the final 49 runs needed 7.1 overs. Nab played an innings which was well judged throughout. His first 25 runs came in 24 balls and included 2 fours and his only 6. A period of consolidation brought him his next 10 runs and he then accelerated past 50. Siva, Nab's not out accomplice, looked carefully at his first few balls before striking two big sixes in the last three balls of the 32nd over and finished undefeated on 24.
Capturing all ten Musselburgh wickets right at the end of their alloted 45 overs might seem to be a decent performance but it could have been so much better. The scorecard shows that the main bugbear was presenting @burgh with 30 runs in wides. Easry on bowlers were beating the bat but just as often their line was awry. This can best be illustrated by the situation when we took the first visiting wicket at 36 after 7.5 overs. The dismissed bat, A. Ilyas, had made 5 and his partner Eddie Gatner had scored 11 - the other 20 runs had come from 4 byes ( a boundary) and 16 wides.
In addition to presenting runs to our opponents bowling wides in such numbers also lowers our over rate which should be 15 per hour. In the first hour we bowled 13 overs but we had also bowled 20 wide balls in this time, so if only 8 wides had been bowled the over rate would hav been on track. We ended 40 minutes over the time limit although a minimum of 15 minutes of that over run can be put down to searching for the ball in the burn or bushes and the mid-innings break extending to 6 minutes.
Our bowling did well to drag back the run rate in the middle of the innings but having reduced 'Burgh to 126 for 8 it was frustrating that they managed to add 54 for the last two wickets. However, it is a pleasing thought that we recorded an opening day win but also know that we can improve parts of our performance.
