Murrayfield DAFS 3rds v Edinburgh South Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 06 May 2023 at 1pm
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 77 runs (rain calculator)
Match report
Peerless Penrose hundred downs DAFS
A magnificent Dean Penrose hundred helped South’s 2s to a rain-affected victory over Murrayfield DAFS 3s at Roseburn Park.
Dean scored exactly 100 from just 64 balls, and Naga Malapati added 53, as South racked up a mammoth total of 283-8 having been put into bat.
Murrayfield were 155-7 from 28.1 overs when the rain arrived, with Russell Barnard and Charlie Barratt taking two wickets apiece in tricky conditions.
It meant that South won by 77 runs on the rain calculator and continued their perfect start to the league campaign.
Knowing the forecast looked bleak, the plan was always to bowl first and try to chase down the prospective target as quickly as possible.
The two captains agreed to reduce the match to 35 overs a side, but when captain George O’Neill lost his first toss of the season, the original plan was torn up, and the batters set their minds to scoring bulk runs on an artificial pitch with small boundaries, and a fast outfield.
George and Paul Reddish started solidly against a swinging new ball, putting on 28 before Paul picked out mid-off from the last ball of the fifth over.
Dipen Vithlani was then run out for just two, left stranded after slipping mid-pitch, and a few nerves started to run through the South lineup.
However, the run-rate was always high, and although George fell for 45 from just 35 balls, mistiming a drive to cover, Murrayfield were never able to wrestle control of the game.
Dean replaced George in the middle, with the score 74-3, and alongside Harry Barratt, continued the scoring at a steady pace.
Harry nicked off for a well-made 32, and Murrayfield may well have been glad to see the back of the fluid left-hander, not knowing the carnage that was about to unfold.
Dean and Naga proceeded to put on 121 for the fifth wicket in 10.5 overs in a masterful display of strength, timing and elegance.
Dean went from 50 to 100 in just 20 balls, hitting all around the ground, picking gaps at will and frankly toying with the bowling.
It was an absolute joy to watch. You see a hundred of that pace and you imagine agricultural hitting, swipes across the line, but there was none of that, just a series of textbook cricket shots, executed to perfection.
There was no let-up at the other end either. Naga played as Naga does, dispatching balls miles over the rope, including one mighty six that Daniel calculated at around 95m.
He batted with a maturity too, rotating the strike, and picking the right balls to attack. On any other day, his innings would have been the main attraction.
This was Dean’s day though, and when he pulled powerfully for four to bring up three figures, every member of both sides rightly applauded a superb player at the top of his game.
Both Naga and Dean fell in quick succession after reaching their respective milestones, but cameos from Eoghan Forde and Charlie carried South’s momentum through to the close.
Daniel Saunders, whose failure with the bat meant he now has an average for the season, took the new ball with Russell, and the pair were typically accurate, repeatedly beating the outside edge and making the most of the ball being dry.
With Daniel building pressure at one end, Russell capitalised at the other, removing both openers, first comprehensively bowled, and then caught behind, to reduce Murrayfield to 33-2.
When Charlie, bowling off a shortened run-up because of the slippy conditions, took two wickets in his first over, Murrayfield were 46-4 and in a whole heap of trouble.
Eoghan took the fifth wicket shortly after, as a sliced drive found George at cover. The required run-rate was now above 11, but Murrayfield rallied as the clouds rolled in and the drizzle started to fall, adding 94 for the sixth wicket in murky conditions more suited to the stadium next door.
Dipen struck to end Murrayfield’s fun, as Naga held on to a steepling catch in the deep, and Harry then picked up a wicket of his own before the rain forced the players from the field.
In the shelter of the pub, we discovered that South had won by 77 runs on the rain calculator, taking the 2s top of Division 5 after two wins from two league games.
