Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 70 runs
Match report
Edinburgh South 2s v DT 4s report:
The 2’s perfect start to their league campaign continued with a comprehensive win against Drummond Trinity at Newfield.
Batting first, South racked up 233-4 from their 40 overs; Siva Kavati top-scoring with an excellent 71.
In reply, some tight bowling and excellent fielding saw DT lose wickets regularly, never threatening to chase down an imposing target.
South currently sit top of Division Five after the first four rounds of fixtures, stretching their unbeaten run in the league to 29 games.
After a night of rain, conditions were soggy underfoot, and captain George O’Neill had no hesitation in batting first when the coin came down the right way.
Siva and George started watchfully against the new ball, negating the early movement on offer, but then accelerated, picking gaps, spreading the field, and rotating the strike nicely on a heavy outfield.
Plenty of balls that would have ordinarily gone to the boundary were held up in the wet grass, but even so, Siva passed 50, and at drinks, the opening stand had reached 115-0.
George fell for 38 to the second ball of the 21st over, gloving one through to the keeper when shaping to cut.
Siva fell soon afterwards to a sharp caught and bowled, and when Harry Barratt and Dean Penrose both fell, for 12 and eight, respectively, DT sniffed an opening.
However, Eoghan Forde joined Dipen Vithlani in the middle, and the pair rebuilt with aplomb, steadying the ship before attacking in the last few overs.
The left-hand, right-hand combination caused problems for the bowlers, and with the field spread, they ran hard and punished the bad balls on offer.
Both were unbeaten at the 40 over mark, Dipen on 43, Eóghan on 41.
Charlie Barratt and Russell Barnard took the new ball, and Russell picked up the first wicket with just his third ball. An outswinger induced the drive, and a thick outside edge looked set to beat the inner ring, but Harry showed all his athleticism to take a remarkable diving catch high away to his right. Think Paul Collingwood at backward point to Matthew Hayden, just in a mirror.
Charlie then bowled the other opener in his second over, as the ball rolled back onto the stumps after a defensive prod, reducing DT to 6-2.
Charlie took his second not long after, knocking back middle stump via an inside edge, and keen not to let his dad have all the fun, Harry struck with his very first delivery to put South further on top.
Charlie went off with an injured shoulder, slipping in the field and landing awkwardly, but DT graciously allowed us a sub fielder, with Graham Smith and then Praful Pant filling in expertly at fine-leg. Praf borrowing someone’s belt in order to stop his jeans falling down was a source of laughter for both sides.
Sriram Govindan bowled six very tidy overs for no reward, and Eoghan’s misery spell meant that any slim hopes DT had of victory were reduced to virtually nil.
Eoghan took 2-18 in his eight overs, and Yogi Sharma bowled beautifully from the other end, taking 2-36 on 2s debut.
Rod Hunt bowled a nice over to round off the DT innings, which finished on 163-8, 70 runs short of the required total.
