Edinburgh South Cricket Club 2nd XI v Edinburgh CC 3rds on Sat 27 May 2023 at 1pm
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets

Match report Vithlani spins a web around Edinburgh CC as South’s winning run continues

- South’s 2s beat Edinburgh CC 3s by six wickets as the sun shines at Inch Park
- A stellar bowling display from Dipen Vithlani, who took 7-12, bowls Edinburgh out for 119
- Opening stand of 96 between George O’Neill and Paul Reddish breaks the back of the chase before middle order see it home

On a glorious day in the capital, the plan before arriving at Inch Park was to win the toss, bat, and make hay while the sun shone.

However, having seen the pitch, George opted to bowl, and Charlie Barratt and Russell Barnard set to work with the new ball, reducing the visitors to 20-3 on a pitch offering plenty of variable bounce.

Nipun Gulia took a superb catch diving forwards at backward point off Russell’s bowling to claim the first, before Charlie targeting the stumps, bowling the Edinburgh number three and pinning their captain lbw.

From that point though, Edinburgh consolidated and grew back into the contest, with Butt and Zeeshan both batting well.

They struck several boundaries, and with them lining up South’s seamers fairly comfortably, Dipen was introduced into the attack, to devastating effect.

He removed Butt, caught superbly at long-on by Nipun, and then Zeeshan, bowled by a fuller, flatter delivery.

Having lost their two set batters, Edinburgh collapsed, with Dipen wreaking absolute havoc, extracting significant turn and bounce from a dry Inch Park track.

He took the final five wickets to fall, finishing with stunning figures of 7-12 from his 7.3 overs, as Edinburgh were bowled out inside 37 overs.

Defending a low total, George and Paul decided that risk-free accumulation was the way to go, and ticked along nicely, frustrating Edinburgh with aggressive running and obstinate defence.

Despite having seen the spinning conditions, it took until the 15th over for Edinburgh to bring spin into the attack, by which time both South openers had their eye in.

When George fell for 44 after drinks, just 24 more were needed for victory.

Paul was dismissed for 41 immediately afterwards, caught on the boundary, and Dipen offered up a simple catch into the leg-side, but Harry Barratt hit 19 in a blistering 12-ball cameo to relieve any nerves, and it was left to Dan Holland to belt a no-ball through the offside and wrap up the win with 44 balls to spare.
