Musselburgh 2nds v Edinburgh South Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 03 Jun 2023 at 1pm
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 60 runs

Match report Super South’s 60 run smash stretches stellar streak

- Despite missing three players from prior victory, including skipper George O’Neill, South stay top of the table and extend their unbeaten league run to 31 fixtures
- Handy contributions from Harry Barratt, Dipen Vithalani, Eóghan Forde and a late order flourish from Sajad Ali helps them accumulate 161.
- An incredibly tight performance in the field restricts Musselburgh to 101 in reply.

After basking in the East Lothian sunshine the hosts asked South to bat first on a dusty strip more typical of Mumbai than Musselburgh.

Harry and Dean started watchfully against the seamers before the latter fell early to a short ball that skidded on and took the top of off-stump.

Dipen joined Harry at the crease and put on a handy 55 run partnership, putting away the loose deliveries and running hard between the wickets in response to a sluggish outfield.

Harry fell for 31 to a straight delivery from ex-Souther Abdul Mohammed and was quickly followed by Graham Smith and Nipun Gulia who both departed in the 21st over to their former clubmate.

This brought factor 50 fan Forde into the fray who swiftly accumulated a handy 40 at more than a run a ball.

Fresh from a sterling performance with the bat in the 3s, Frank Joseph strode to the crease with plans to push South on further, but was back in the pavilion a few minutes later.

What the innings lacked in duration it made up for in drama. After conceding 27 runs from his 18 deliveries, the home skipper decided his best chance of a wicket was available at the non-striker’s end and elected to mankad the South paceman to take the score to 125-7.

It didn’t take long for the home team to regret their decision as they welcomed Sajad “Dada” Ali to the crease. His unbeaten run-a-ball 25 with the tail took South to a commendable 161 despite being bowled out with three balls to spare.

After some much needed half-time hydration, South’s skipper on the day Daniel Saunders had an embarrassment of riches to call upon with the ball as the 2s took to the field to defend their total.

Having been denied the chance to have a go with the bat, Frank was the first choice to open up with left-armer Russell Barnard.

Musselburgh opener Chris Fox had a quiet day with the bat, falling in the fourth over to a screamer of a slip catch by Nipun, who dived two-handed to his right and pouched the ball before it hit the deck.

Fox was swiftly followed off the field by his fellow opener Ramchandrappa who was deceived by a Barnard slower ball which uprooted his middle stump.

This was followed by incredibly tight spells from Sriram Govindan and Eóghan who restricted the opposition to just 18 runs from the next 12 overs.

Sriram in particular bowled an incredibly tight channel which led to the introduction of a four-strong slip cordon but despite a number of nervy swipes, neither batter was able to guide an edge to the vultures behind square.

After bagging five wickets in the South innings, Abdul’s gritty knock saw him face 43 deliveries for a total of nine runs before he was dismissed by a classic Eóghan delivery which took the off bail.

The home side took this as a sign to dig in with a steady partnership taking them to 69-3 with 10 overs remaining. A quick drinks break pep talk between the South squad set the target of trying to bowl out the hosts for under 110.

A cluster of wickets from Frank and Harry brought the former’s new friend to the crease. Once reunited at the non-striker’s end, lightning didn’t strike twice with Frank electing to target the stumps 22 yards away.

After an LBW shout was turned down, Jafry sold his teammate down the river in a desperate attempt to face his adversary, which led to Puttaswamayya being run out for a very patient 39 off 104 balls.

With the light beginning to fade, South turned to spin to wrap up the innings with wickets falling to Nipun, Dipen, and then Nipun again in the 38th, 39th and 40th overs, respectively. This led to Musselburgh falling 60 runs shy of South’s total with just four balls remaining in the match.
