Kirk Brae 2nds v Edinburgh South Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 29 Apr 2023 at 1pm
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets
Match report
3’s win by 6 wickets on a very wet day in Edinburgh.
- Jeremy takes 3-8 off 5 overs in first innings
- Jas, Raviteja, Kalyan and Shail share the other wickets between them
- Ian makes a quick 39 and is ably supported by Graham in an opening stand of 60 odd
- Contributions by all batters get us over the line
Edinburgh South arrived at our very near neighbours under very gloomy skies and drizzle to a pitch that looked very slow and low and an outfield that was too long for football let alone cricket. After delaying the game half an hour and reducing to 30 overs Jas won the toss and elected to bowl.
Jas and Raviteja made a miserly start to the bowling with the kirk brae openers proving solid in defence but not offering a huge amount on the attack.
Seeing the faster bowlers weren’t making the break through and the pitch not offering anything to them Jas turned to Aaron and Jeremy to really restrict the run rate and try and prise out a wicket by playing boring cricket. Aaron held up an end that allowed Jeremy to execute his ‘you miss, I hit’ strategy to full effect, removing both openers and the number 3 in quick succession. At drinks Kirk Brae were 39-3 off 15 and seemingly going nowhere. Equally 100 looked a good total so they weren’t that far behind the run rate.
If the first half of the game had belonged to South’s bowlers the second half belonged the Kirk Brae batters. Coming out with intent, the next 7 batsman played to accelerate the scoring after the solid foundation they had set, going aerial much more than the in the first 15 overs in an attempt to take the outfield out of the equation. South still bowled will with Jas and Shail still being tight, Raviteja, Kalayan and Rahul were more expensive than they wanted to be, Rahul was particularly unlucky as his over coincided with Kirk Brae biggest hitter deciding to get on with it.
Kirk Brae finished their innings with 129-8, a total that looked 30 runs too many for the South batters. Pick of the bowlers was Jeremy and Raviteja was unlucky not to pick up a couple of wickets in his last over with a couple of chances put down.
A quick lunch and then South were out and opening with Ian and Graham. The contrasting styles of both batsmen proved a boon for South with Ian doing the bulk of the scoring with some big drives down the ground and swipes into the leg side. Running well Graham and Ian brought up an opening stand of 60 odd in 14 overs, showing that scoring quickly was possible. Unfortunately for South on the stroke of drinks Kirk Brae brought on Yadav who bowled tightly with a slingy action that was ideal for the pitch, producing 2 deliveries that kept low to remove both South openers in consecutive overs. This brought Rahul and Mohan to the crease, Rahul looked solid, combining power down the ground with some deft sweeps off the spinners to keep the score ticking over.
Mohan was a key wicket for South as his mercurial talent could have seen them home with ease. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be as a sharp catch at midwicket accounted for him for 9. Shail showed his all round credentials and the importance of being able to rotate a left and right hander together at the crease, despatching the Kirk Brae bowlers into the leg side with regularity while defending solidly. When Rahul fell for a really good 20 South weren’t out the woods. Fortunately Kunal arrived at the crease with some power, smashing 2 fours in the 27th over to get South over the line with 6 wickets and 2 overs in hand.
Player of the match has to Ian as his 39 set the tone for South’s batting and always kept us up with the rate. Special mention to Jeremy for excellent bowling figures. To be fair to the pitch it played very well with only the odd ball keeping low but the outfield and wet weather always meant it was going to be a turgid game. Kirk Brae were hospitable as always.
Next week the 3’s take on Peebles side featuring former Edinburgh South funday cup holder Gary Walsh in there first home game of the season, it should be a great game and no doubt the batters are hoping for a better outfield and less running next week!
