Edinburgh South Cricket Club 3rd XI v Dunnikier CC 2nds on Sun 14 May 2023 at 1pm
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets

Match report 3’s Batting fails to fire but Jeremy continues his dominance with the ball.

Finally the 3’s got a sunny day to play cricket on. Jas lost the toss and the 3’s were put in to bat, this didn’t seem a disaster as the feeling was the pitch would get worse as the day went on and with the threat of late afternoon rain the outfield would slow down too.

Mohan and Paul went into bat for South and looked solid until an ill-judged run ran Paul out for 4. This brought Simon to the crease and him and Mohan accumulated nicely until Mohan fell for 14 with the score on 41. Unfortunately for South, Sajad fell soon after sending Rahul to the crease. With the score on 47 and 2 strong batsmen at the crease South were still confident of producing a good score and when they reached 70-3 at drinks they were very confident with a bit of hitting from the lower order that 160 was on and that would be 20 runs too many on this pitch.

Alas this was not to be, a batting collapse of 7-4 reduced south from 76-3 to 80 all out 5 overs later, oh dear! The pitch misbehaved a little bit but this was mainly down to accurate bowling from Dunniker.

South went into the break knowing they didn’t have enough runs but that actually 100 would probably have been a defendable score so weren’t completely out the game.

Raviteja and Aaron opened up the bowling, both keeping it fairly tight and Ravi was rewarded with the wicket of Dunniker opener Naeem for 2. Aaron and Ravi were swapped for Jeremy and Jas and this was where South had to have any chance of getting anything out of the game. And give South a chance they did! With Jas keeping one end locked down Jeremy bowled with skill and guile (and a bit of luck from the pitch!) to bowl South into the game, removing Dunniker’s top and middle order to record excellent figures of 8 overs, 4 wickets for 16 runs. This left Dunniker needing 21 to win with 5 wickets in hand. Unfortunately for South some very solid orthodox batting from Shoaib and some very un-orthodox shots from Abbas got Dunniker over the line. A dropped catch with the score on 73 could have made for a tense finish but South were always at least 20 runs short.

Once again the bowling looked good for South but the batting on early season pitches has proved tricky. Next week brings Morton 3’s to the inch on the second pitch. Morton were the only team to take points off the 2’s last year in a nail biting tie so another good game for the 3’s to show their worth but with a few notable absences on the availability chart it could be a tough game again.
