Edinburgh South Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets

Match report
• 4th XI sent back down to earth with a tough loss against Westquarter and Redding 2nds at Cavalry Park.
• Souths, batting first put on 143 all out, which was chased down by Westquarter and Redding with 2 overs to go.
• Excellent knocks from C Innes (40), C Graham (33 retired hurt*), and K Peel (34*) make the difference for Westquarter.
• For the second game in a row Rod Hunt top scores for Souths, with a gritty 30.
• Excellent rear-guard action from the 11th wicket partnership of Sidharth ‘Sid’ Kashyap and Jack ‘Lucky’ McLuckie take Souths from 108-9 to 143 all out.
• A wicket apiece was taken by Declan Lancaster (1-20), Kalyan ‘whispering death’ Pagadala (1-18), and Sid (1-33).

With rain heavily affecting the 1st and 2nd XI’s the day before, it was a nice surprise to turn up to a sunny and dry Cavalry Park. Keshav ‘Kesh’ Bhatnagar, (captaining the 4 XI in the league for the first time as co-captain) lost the toss, with Westquarter putting us into bat first. Phil Griffiths and Dan ‘M.S. Dani’ Holland opened the batting, the former picking up the bat for the first time in nine months following an injury. The pair got Souths off to a promising start, taking us to 20 runs in five overs. They were unlucky not to score more, with several stylish shots from both trickling just short of the boundary due to a slow outfield.

In the fifth over Dan was caught after his eyes lit up, and Phil was bowled 5 overs later. In a bizarre 13th over, Anura Suriyapperuma, and Fahad Shafiq were both dismissed caught behind down the leg side, something that rarely happens twice in a season, let alone in a single over (although Anura maintains that the ball came off his forearm and not his glove). Fahad’s dismissal in particular was unfortunate as he had gotten himself in nicely with five runs from eight balls.

At this stage, Souths were at 42-4 and looking in real trouble. However, Rod (30) and Sajad ‘Dada’ Ali (22) put on an excellent 50-partnership, taking us to 95 before Dada was dismissed in the 24th over. In the following four overs, the platform that had been built by Rod and Dada was not capitalised upon, as the dreaded 4th XI batting collapse returned, reducing us to nine down for only 12 more runs. The situation was looking bleak, however the never say die duo of Jack (16) and Sid (5*) batted out ten overs for the final wicket, putting on 35 more runs, keeping Souths well in the game.

After the innings break, Souths got off to a great start, with Declan dismissing Westquarter captain P O’Growney in the first over, a wicket which was made by a fantastic catch from Phil at mid-off. This promising start continued from the other end, with Kalyan bowling the captain's brother, B O’Growney with a snorting full toss which clipped the top of off stump in the fifth over. Three overs later, Jack took a good catch at backward point from a Sid (who was bowling in his shades) delivery, reducing the opposition to 28-3. Although C Graham hit a boundary and a maximum in consecutive balls in an 11 run 23rd over, Souths bowling attack managed to continue to squeeze Westquarter’s’ batters so that by the 30th over they were way off the required run rate.

Westquarter’s C Innes in particular however, over the next five overs got the bit between his teeth, taking the opposition from 93 after 30, to 132 after 35. This left them only 12 runs needed from the final 5 overs. A late glimmer of hope was provided by a smart run out by Jack and Rod; however, the boundary was cleared with the first ball of the next over, giving the opposition the victory.

Westquarter and Redding were gracious in victory, with C Graham coming over to us after the game with some nice things to say, especially about Sid and Jack’s partnership. If anyone is interested, I would recommend reading up on the work that they have been doing on inclusion in our game, especially around disability cricket. We will travel away to Falkirk in the reverse fixture on the 8 July, where we will hopefully be able to return the favour of being good winners. Overall, this was a tough loss to take, however important lessons have been learned which hopefully should put us in good stead for the rest of the season.
