Marchmont 4ths v Edinburgh South Cricket Club 4th XI on Sat 13 May 2023 at 1pm
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets

Match report Not since the cavalry of Bonnie Prince Charlie camped on this very spot in 1745, has a band of brothers anticipated the coming battle more, nor enjoyed home-made brownies quite so much. These modern men, in their gleaming whites, eyed, over the crumbly, chocolaty crust, a prize far greater than mere victory over government forces at Prestonpans, in front of them, stood twenty league points, ready to be claimed as their own.

Keshav won the toss and, with confidence high in the bright spring sunshine, elected to bat.

Reader, if you should harbour any doubts over the veracity of the following account, be aware, Mohan was on the dials, keeping an eagle eye over the scoring, so rest easy in the accuracy of the digits.

The openers, Rod and Graham, set about their task with aplomb. Blocking the good balls, taking the singles where the opportunity arose. Everything was going to plan, until the third over. Rod, after facing four dots, swung his hands through the ball, but didn’t quite get hold of it in the way he wanted and was out caught. Shaman came to the crease for the final ball of the over and placed his cut backwards of the gully fielder; or so he thought, leaping full length like a salmon to his left Sachdeva took a worldy and Shaman was on his way back to the hutch. A double wicket maiden.

Things didn’t get better for South in the 4th over as Graham, playing down the wrong line, was caught behind. With the scoreboard showing 7-3, Henry and Kalyan P offered some stout resistance until Kalyan was controversially given out caught, he was sure he hadn’t hit it.

Keshav came to the crease on a mission to shore up the innings and turn his teams fortunes around. He dug deep and batted for 36 balls, stemming the flow of wickets. Henry played some classy shots and stuck around to support his captain, before being bowled by one that did a bit off the surface.

Phil and David both hit one boundary and looked like they would form an important partnership but it wasn’t to be.

Olly was bowled off a first-ball full toss in the 25th over and it was all down to Kalyan K and Shafay to rescue something from the innings, and rescue it they did. Short, full, wide or straight, it didn’t matter to Kalyan as he hit everything all over the ground. 5 fours and 2 sixes helped him grab 36 runs from just 25 balls and he carried his bat after Shafay finally succumbed and was bowled. 93 all out.

It was a small target to defend, but the heads never went down, the bowling was excellent, the fielding was tight. Olly was given the new ball bowled a magnificent spell of fast and accurate swing bowling, included two maidens and a wicket for just 14 runs.

Henry from the other end started well, but when he was hit for a 6 the captain took him off. He was replaced by Phil, who was promptly smashed over the boundary for six himself. Phil got his revenge the very next ball with an in-swinging delivery that smashed into leg stump.

With Phil leaking runs, Kalyan K was brought on to shore-up the attack, and that he did. Each ball snarled and snorted at the batters. His pace just too much and the free scoring was brought to a halt. 4 overs, 1 wicket, and all for just 3 runs.

Shafay and Shaman held up the other end with spin but couldn’t prize any more batters from the crease.

The final overs were bowled by Kalyan P and Keshav. Kalyan bowled a fine spell, conceding very few runs, he could have had two or three wickets on another day. Keshav too was unlucky, he incredibly got a paw and almost clung onto three screamers, but it just wasn’t to be and Marchmont reached their goal with a maximum and the 20 points were theirs. Ah, Culloden.
