· Fahad “all out attack” Shafiq and Jack “bowler turned batter” McLuckie top score with 17 each.

After the 1st XI sides met midweek to battle it out for the Masterton Trophy, it was the turn of Edinburgh South’s “fearsome 4s” to travel to Newfield to face the Accies 3rd XI. With daunting scorecards in their first two games, Accies are the team to beat in this league, and it was always going to be an uphill battle.
After being put in to bat, Kesh and Shaman made contrasting starts – Shaman clipping one away for four in the first over, Kesh on the defensive. Very defensive. Think full set of armour complete with shield. With the Accies outfield clearly practicing their shouting for the Beyoncé concert later at Murrayfield, the warning signs for South came early, with Shaman caught out.
That brought David to the crease, who settled in nicely and looked in good nick, before being promptly run out. In the same over, Stephen followed, despite an encouraging warm up beforehand singing Crazy in Love.
Like any relationship, communication is key, and South 4s clearly need to buy each other flowers and spend time with the in-laws so that they can understand calls of “yes” and “no” from their fellow batters. With Kesh and then Anura both being caught off the bowling of Parmeshwar Kendre, South were struggling at 35-5 at the break.
In step Fahad and Jack. The first two overs after the break went for 28 runs, and swiftly silenced the Accies outfield. It turns out the boundaries are quite short at New Field. Sadly, the fun was short lived, with Fahad caught behind.
Jack and Konain put on a partnership of 20 odd runs with some solid running, before a spinning, drifting ball from Sachin Mogare bowled Konain. Like brother like brother, Shafay followed the same fate, from the same type of ball, in the same over. Jack was also bowled, before Ollie and Martin showed some grit at the death to score a few runs with some classy leg side shots and good running.
At this point, the crowd (consisting of Phil Griffiths and an out of tune piper) were all asking the same thing – can South do it, can they contain the mighty Accies batting?
Short answer, no.
With huge hitting, and despite some accurate bowling, Ollie, Shafay and Konain all felt the pain of the short New Field boundaries. Kesh and Martin stemmed the tide a little, with Kesh picking up South’s sole wicket, before the inevitable result. Accies are clearly miles ahead in Division 8, having scored 245 against Murrayfield 5s and bowled Leith 3s out for 72, so South 4s are in good company. At the time however, only the comfort of rich tea biscuits afterwards offered any solace, and even they weren’t universally received. Next week, I’ll stick to Hobnobs.
