Match report
* Double A Century Partnership Lights Up Masterton Trophy Group Win for South*
Edinburgh South made a winning return to The Masterton Trophy. This was after several seasons of opting out of participation and probably our first venture in it since it changed from the previous straight knock out format to playing in groups prior to an eliminator followed by Semi-finals and a final.
This was thanks to an opening partnership by Adnan and Abhinav of 100 in 11 overs as we chased a target of 124 to win. This was the first time that Adnan and Abhinav had opened the innings together.
Before that Academicals had won the toss and batted first. They made a rapid start which had it been maintained would have had South chasing at least 180. However, our bowlers and fielders hauled the overall rate to only four more than a run a ball. Adnan and Nab, in his only over, each took two wickets, Farhan and Manik one each and there were 3 runouts. The last of these, off the final ball of the innings, would find it's way into any highlights package. The batters set off for a rather risky leg bye and the ball then flew at the stumps and beyond as the batters scampered up and down. In the end Manik, the bowler, ran out the non-striker as they attempted a fourth leg bye. Our fielding effort also included a catch at the wicket by Adnan.
Our brilliant opening stand came to an end when Abhinav was caught at deep extra and Adnan fell l.b.w. to the first ball ofthe next over. Two fine 4s from Praful and a four and a six from succesive balls by Siva saw us to the win in 13.4 overs. A most encouraging victory but there will be stiffer tests ahead of us.
